Thank you Gabriel. This seems like just the thing to explore, I love string quartets and find Boccherini very interesting as well. Sigh; another one for the wish list.

Well, the important thing is that the wish list is filled with interesting music... Of course, the problem comes later, when you order them... ;D ...but with self-control you can always reach a satisfactory regulation. ;)

Thanks, I really enjoyed it.

I love music. Sadly, I'm an audiophile too.

* I wish this dude would have written a lot more chamber music.  His two quartets are phenomenal.

Symphony No.9 in e minor, "From the New World" recorded 1967

This 3 year old 96/24 remastering is simply unbelievable. The sound almost rivals any recording made in 2009. On top of that, you get classic performances of these great works...a must have.  :)

From the newish Hyperion box, a glorious performance!

Saygun, Symphonies Nos. 1 & 2 on CPO.  After listening to Symphonies 1-5, all of them high quality products of Saygun's maturity, I think the first two are the most immediately appealing.  Both have meltingly beautiful slow movements.  The 2nd in particular is full of delicious melodies.

Orpheus

Coincidentally, I have been listening to Orpheus today. I have to say I was somewhat nonplussed. Much of it seems rather morose and greyish. I'll have to listen a few more times to figure it out.

Villa-Lobos
: Chorôs 6, 8, 9 and Bachianas Brasileiras No 5. John Neschling and the sumptuous Sao Paulo SO (BIS). I love this music. The whole series of Chorôs is IMO more interesting than the BB. The Sao Paulo orchestra is a virtuoso outfit and the BIS engineers capture everything with stunning presence and detail. I have most of them in 2 versions and so far the BIS series wins the contest.

Didn't Mackerras record another Beethoven cycle with the Liverpool Philharmonic?

Yes, in the early '90s.

How does that set compare with his latest Hyperion set?

Haven't heard the first one, unfortunately; I'm halfway through exploring the new one, and although I was slightly let down by the Philharmonia 9th (good but not great), the first three symphonies were stupendous, and the Fifth very good. Special nod to an excellent Third Symphony. The Scottish Chamber Orchestra are fantastic and the fact that each performance is a one-off live performance is really neat. I got it from MDT for $25, so no regrets. At a higher price you may want to do some more comparison shopping, but rest assured there is good stuff to be heard.

Transfers are OK, rather "clean" and occassionally a bit "pale" but all in all quite enjoyable.
Musically, a treasure trove of great performers from the past and I'm very fond of Bach through the eyes of the Romantics.

I like the way Bilson, EBS and Gardiner do Mozart K.467.

It surely doesn't sound like the famous Geza Anda recording. Punch, no sugar!

The last CD of this box. I started listening 19-2-2009, so I took my time with it, and will start again after this Volume XXI, filled with remnants, that is attached to the complete set. Some real fine things to be found here, including some solo Baryton divertimento's. A most excellent box of great musical value, and I am so glad that Brilliant gave us this treasure.

Take for instance the "Fanfare for the New Atlantis", that has a fabulous introduction on Brass, that is at one inspiring, and completely convincing in its grandness. The following strings make it sear into celestial regions. Or take some samples of the Guitar Concerto preferably the IV movement, "Adagio, allegro giusto" and undergo the warm gossamer veil, that covers you with all kinds of infectious thrills.
And then the II movement from the "Loon Lake" symphony, as mysterious as they go, with at every corner a surprise.
This well recorded and performed CD will be lingering in my memory for a long time. It will disappear in my collection, and I probably will never hear it again but then, I played it a dozen times already. With such a large collection, and at my age, that is a frustrating thought, lingering in the back of my mind, and it makes me feel uneasy at the best of times.
