Garth, John (1721-1810) - Cello Concertos w/ Richard Tunnicliffe & the Avison Ensemble on period instruments; 2-CD set nicely packaged in a single-size jewel case; this long lived English composer, a student of Charles Avison, apparently wrote a lot of music but virtually little has been recorded; these compositions are considered some of the earliest English cello concertos - MusicWeb Review HERE -  :D

Dave, Isn't this an excellent set by an ensemble that is not so well-known on our shore?

Hi Stuart - believe that my purchase was prompted by some reviews on this thread - cannot remember at the moment -  :-\

But, the music & sound recording are excellent, and performed w/ period instruments; if you love the music of the early transitional classical era and the cello, then I'm sure that this 2-CD set will please; plus, the price is right (these are not 'full' CDs for timing, but the cost is like a one CD set); I have nothing else by this group but would have no hesitation in considering other recordings by them.

Dave  :)

I mentioned this 2-CD set and in fact had bought all the CD's recorded by the Avison Ensemble released by divine art two months ago during the MDT sales ...

Stuart - OK, so you already own the set?  If so, what do you think?  I've gone through only one listening, but plan another spin tomorrow - Dave  :)

I have listened to the John Garth's set only once.  I think the performance is quite refreshing and the sound quality quite good.  I really cannot comment on the level of virtuosity until I have given the set a more in-depth listen ...

Today so far:

Dvorak, Symphony No. 7 - Neumann/CzPO Supraphon DDD recording.  Some recordings made by this team could be too reverberant, but these Dvorak recordings are just right, warm and present.  The interpretation is thrilling.

Stravinsky, Suite from The Soldier's Tale
Shostakovich, Piano Concerto No. 1
Prokofiev, Symphony No. 1
- Rosenberg, piano; Gerard Schwarz/LA Chamber Orchestra on a Delos CD that must be among the oldest in my collection

Sibelius, Symphony No. 6 - Vänskä/Bis

Schubert, Symphony No. 9 - Munch/Boston/RCA on a hybrid SACD.  Clocks in at 44:45.  An exciting performance.

Carter, String Quartet No. 2 - Pacifica Quartet/Naxos

Honegger, Symphony No. 1 - Baudo/CzPO on a Supraphon Lp (I highly recommend Baudo's Honegger.)

Szymanowski, Violin Concerto No. 1 - Wilkomirski/Rowicki on a Muza Lp

Kozeluh, Symphony in F major - Hvalicek/Prague Chamber Orchestra on a Supraphon Lp.  Lovely.

Taneyev, Piano Trio; Tcherepnin, Piano Trio - Odeon Trio on a German RCA Lp.  Both wonderful works.  The Tcherepnin is very short.  The Odeon Trio was an excellent group with the late Leonard Hokanson on piano, Anjelica May on Cello, a wonderful cellist, and Kurt Gunter on violin.  You can have this on CD for $40 for about 40 minutes of music.

Bruckner, Symphony No. 7 - Schuricht/Hague Philharmonic on a single Nonesuch Lp.
