Gustav Mahler:  Symphony No. 9

Due apology to whoever, but, man! this piece is a drag.  :P :-X  (Or is it just Karajan?)

Absolutely gorgeous playing here. I was very lucky to find a new copy of this recently on amazon for a decent price. The sound is better than the CD-R I had previously of these performances, which was clearly an amplified version of this one. If you see this, grab it!

Hi Stuart - just learned about that Christmas concerto from the liner notes of the CD shown; actually that piece is the 12th concerto in the Op. 3 works, and also goes by the name Pastorale per il Santissimo Natale - Dave  :)

Dave,  Thanks for the info.  Except in the VERY early days of my venture in classical music, I have never liked to buy recordings with lacerated works, i.e. one concerto from a composer and another concerto from another composer.  I want the whole work.  However, I would make exceptions for Karajan and the BPO.

I have this recording and like it ...

Now playing CD1 from this set, which arrived from MDT last month.  The overture is the recycling of a few other Handel's works ...

Solitary Wanderer

This is one of the best performances I ever heard of the 9th Symphony.

[Karajan+Berlin Phil: Mahler's 9th symphony]  OK, thanks for the input.  For me I guess it's the music, not the recording.

Not the piece--it's one of the greatest works in the symphonic repertoire.  Karajan's Bruckner is pretty good.

As you and I understand, everything is a matter of opinion.  I don't pretend to very familiar with Mahler's 9th so I will listen again a few times; sometimes things grow on me.

Meanwhile, I'm enjoying ...

I think Mahler's works require a certain state of mind to appreciate.  As even Karajan pointed out years ago, Mahler works can be difficult for younger people to appreciate.  I could not stand Mahler's works twenty years ago ...
