Stuart - I've been very interested in the ongoing discussion of the Silverman set; currently, I have just two 'complete' cycles of the Beethoven Piano Sonatas (Annie's that George encouraged me to purchase & Claude Franck's, just a bargain) - I will be awaiting George's opinion; I also believe that one of our other experts in this genre, i.e. Todd, was quite positive in these performances, but will await his own assessment (or re-assessment) -  ;D

I'll try to get to that set sooner than I originally planned, since you and Rubio are awaiting my opinion. I'll post in the listening thread (or maybe the Complete Beethoven Sonata thread), since Todd's Silverman thread was on the old board.

I can say one thing right now, the liner notes are mighty impressive. Detailed notes on the structure of the LvB sonata, and on each sonata itself (about a page and a half on each sonata), all written by the pianist. The pages aren't numbered but there's gotta be 50+ pages here, all in English.

I am not sure where you can even buy this thing though, that wa sone of the reasons I grabbed it on Friday, I never see it in stores and amazon doesn't have it.

I think some 2000 sets were produced--and they all sold. So you'll find it, if at all, on the used market. (I was quite surprised George found a set in the first place. In my availability (not performance)-survey, I listed it as unavailable.)

Me too, it was my main reason for buying it. Luckily the store didn't know how rare it is. I only paid $60 and it's in like new condition.

As usual Jens, thanks for the info!

Very good choice.

Impressed by the cover picture. Curious how that instrument sounds. Read also that horns are used in the compositions, which I like. Plus the good reviews, and the fact that Haydn took this work very serious, all make up that I purchased this box-set.

You did well. I have them all, and besides recommending those Curtis recordings would like to add that this Agrippina is very fine. An alternative view on Monteverdi's Poppea....

I am still trying to decide if I like this CD as much as I do the usual Mutter's CD's, which I have quite a few.  The non-Bach music is too modern for my taste ...

:) An average performance definitely shouldn't get in the way of hearing Malipiero's great symphonies!

Yes Sarah, I am aware of the previous releases that the performances leave much to be desired, in terms of interpretation and ability of the orchestra.  :) Furthermore the recordings are also not that good.
But the music is of a high order, so untill nothing better comes my way, these have to do I am afraid.

Items I have recently ordered are beginning to dribble in, yesterday this arrived, but I have not opened yet:

Today's mail brought these:

My ears will be very busy soon.

Wow, this new recording of The Nose looks great; I didn't realize it was out!  Also didn't realize that it introduces the Mariinsky's own recording label, which is very good news, too.

Edit: just looked at the new label's website, here, and we have another Shostakovich disc to look forward to in a few weeks, with Symphonies 1 and 15.

Ah. Well somehow it put me in mind instead of tipping cows. I don't know why...

Anyway, nothing like a couple of snot rockets and a good fart to start the day out right. :)

Per recommendation of the only guy I know who's a certifiable Mahler nut but who still has a sense of humor about it  ;D  I just ordered this

(oop, used)

in hopes of finding a Mahler 8 that I can love as much as the rest of his symphonies
(at least until the MTT/SFS 8th gets released  :-\ ).
