I've been under a rock when it comes to this series and I have none in my collection. Given their low price point, are there any discs in this series you all would heartily recommend?

Renfield

Absolutely! (I love the username, by the way. :D)

From those I have,

From those I don't, I'll let others weigh in before suggesting a few that I suspect are worth getting. :)

I haven't heard that Barbirolli M6 reissue, but can confirm that it is frequently recommended.

Bear in mind that EMI has quite a few things on this label that are available in often cheaper boxed sets, for example:

& & vs.

and

& vs.

I recommend the following:

I am not keen on Marriner in general, but the mass disc is very good, with extremely strong vocal/instrumental contributions.

I'll seperate this from the rec post so there is no confusion - can anybody comment on the following ones? Sorry for massive spam attack :'(

I have the Hindemith Kammermusik. If you're interested in this sort of thing, I don't think you can go wrong with it; otherwise I've only heard Chailly's version, there doesn't seem to be much difference between the two.

Also have the Verdi/Cherubini, which I'm satisfied with, but also have not much to compare it to.

(the Schumann 4tets and the Berg look tempting, I must say)
formerly VELIMIR (before that, Spitvalve)

Drasko

I have half of Zemlinsky duo, if you like late romantic super lush orchestral songs that is superb choice.

The Shankar is superb! I have it in the double forte issue that preceeded this Gemini one.

I highly recommend the previously very hard to find Scriabin sonatas with Ogdon:

:Hm, a Geroge Recommendation™. Might as well bump it up the wishlist:

Indeed, hehe. I am unsatisfied with both Hamelin and Ashkenazy, maybe Ogdon will help.

He's more poetic and tender than Ashy without losing any of the power (when appropriate.)

IIRC, the Handel keyboard suites--comprising two 2-CD sets--were reissued in Gemini form. These were done in concert by Richter and Gavrilov (not together but trading off, each doing a certain number of suites) and the second set (in my earlier pre-Gemini edition anyway) is filled out with Richter's Beethoven Tempest. Those are must-haves IMO.

Cheers,

I'd thoroughly recommend the Nielsen set (my favourite reading of the violin concerto is included in it); the Roussel (great fun and blowing the likes of Dutoit away in this music); the Zemlinsky (little rivalry in this music, though the EMI 3CD set as an alternative may be more appropriate); the Penderecki is definitely worth considering if you like his neo-Romantic period; but above all i recommend Abbado's Hindemith--love it!

Yes, Dirk, they were released this way on the Gemini series. Nice sets!

The Copland Symphony No 3 etc set (Mata) and Groves's 'The Tempest' etc (Sibelius) are fine issues in this series.

I was interested in the Medici String Quartet playing Haydn Op. (oops, forgot!). Anyone know this?

eyeresist

Prokofiev piano concertos by Beroff/Masur are excellent.

Grieg orchestral music by Barbirolli, Beecham, Berglund - the Homage March cond. Barbirolli is terrific.

Any comments on Barenboim/Barbirolli in the Brahms piano concerti? Are they competitive with Fleisher/Szell and/or Gilels/Jochum? And how do they compare to those two sets?

More romantic, broader tempos. A different conception for sure.

In short, BUY, BUY, BUY!!

I forgot to mention that one.

admiralackbar74

Thanks for the reply, George.

One more that I'm finding myself interested in now that I'm looking through their catalogue.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? I don't have a recording of the Quartet in my collection yet, even though I enjoy the piece. Would this be a good one to get or should I be looking elsewhere?
