Third (and final  ;)) time this quiet, Summer evening:

I think I'll investigate this, too (although perhaps a--cough, cough--used and cheaper copy).  Your write-up sold me: I like neoclassicism, love the 1940s, and the Lyrita discs I have are terrific, so...

I'm going to have to investigate this fellow! Shame that Lyrita discs are expensive and I am a skinflint - but I suppose I could buy the one with the Brian coupling and kill two birds with one stone.

Three birds, actually, as both of Brian's symphonies are worthy of your esteemed attention, too!  :) Great disc anyhow, and just £7.43 at Amazon.co.uk! (Hope Q. isn't here to scale it down)  ;)

... music is not only an 'entertainment', nor a mere luxury, but a necessity of the spiritual if not of the physical life, an opening of those magic casements through which we can catch a glimpse of that country where ultimate reality will be found.    RVW, 1948

Okay, a fourth time - for my own used & cheap copy of the admirable First (1947) by the "lean" Arnold Cooke.  ;) Neoclassicism and Modernism go very well together after all, isn' it?  ;)  0:)

 ;D

IIRC I have seen copies of this Cooke disc at our local credit card leeching service used CD store, so I'll check over the weekend.

I smell a story.

;D

The slightly sad part: it's one of now just a handful of stores in NYC dedicated to CDs.  The only other one I know of is J&R Music (although Barnes & Noble and Borders stores aren't too bad).  The recent closing of the two Virgin stores was a big blow.

I just ordered the Brian disc. I hope my significant other doesn't find out - I am already rightly being made to feel guilty for buying so many books and CDs in the past 2 weeks 0:)

How do you feel about these Dopper symphonies compared to the 7th? I found them all to be somewhat lacking next to the 7th's riot of energy and colour.

I'll have to get back to you about this.  I've only just been introduced and I was listening at a time of distraction, i.e., work.  Usually new composers take some time to soak into my brain until I wrap my head around them.  But I've had a quick introduction to Dutch composers thanks to Johan and his sidekick Johan.

That's the best way. I've managed to find some works very bland on a first listen, but after a second or third I fall in love with them.

Are things really going that way in NYC, too?  :-X Sounds almost like a perfect summary of the fate of the music stores in my own, very small, town of Utrecht - or indeed Amsterdam. Happily, we're saved by the (mostly investigative-partner-proof) Internet:

Yes, but two that remain are by far the best, IMO. Virgin was handy, but I don't really miss it, all that LOUD music overlapping from the neighboring section got annoying. I miss browsing (not buying) at the uptown tower, though.

I'd rather my wife bought a few more CDs and a lot fewer expensive haircuts and cosmetics and magazines and...never mind.
