As the poor relation to the guitar and lute family of instruments  ;), I don't have a tremendous amount of piano music. Sure, I have a lot of Bach, but that's a given for me.

I have listened a lot to what the guitarist composers were purveying in the Parisian salons of the period so decided to check out what was happening on the dark side. Can't comment on the recording compared to others but I am astounded by the quality of the music. This is a bit of an epiphany for me. I've never gone beyond the Transcendental Studies in Liszt and I'm a bit nervous of what might happen if I do because I can't stop spinning this set. I have seven Ligeti and two Lutoslawski CDs just arrived and haven't touched them yet because of this.

The works are a wonderful introduction.  I haven't heard the recording but it has garnered high praise.  How do you like it so far?
Well, after first listening, I must say I am impressed by the fourth, it's fantastic piece, I really like it. The first is also good, much more romantic piece.

Brahms chamber set performed by Amadeus Q and company, it's a very passionate if sometime rough and tumble set that finally got me into Brahms chamber works.  I was a little ADD back then, and always starved for cash (grad student stipend is very low) and I sold it off before I should have.

Mozart string quartets performed by the Hagen Quartet.  I just need to break out from my earlier prejudices and tastes for recordings and listen to something very different.  I had gotten to the point where I had solidified into one specific flavor of performance style and sold everything that didn't match it.  My collection is boringly narrow in scope.

Have you considered adding some Mahler?  ;)

BTW, it's good to see you back!

Amadeus rough and tumble?  I'd say unctuous and saccharine.  I sold it long ago and never have and never will regret it.  The Hagen is "da bomb," however.

You know so many people on these forums and rmcr despite Amadeus Q's affected, romanticized playing so much that I'm surprised that their cds keep selling! :D

Actually yeah I do! :D  I didn't know that they remastered the Bernstein recordings until I read the Mahler thread.  Wow!  Those are great recordings and sound quality was uneven on the previous releases and I need contrast with what I have.  Alright that's it, that's enough spending for now.

Regarding the Brahms' Amadeus set, what about it makes you say it is unctuous and saccharine?  Which set do you like for Brahms' string quartets, et al?

I have known this set for 25 years  in both its LP and CD incarnations and love it, even though the Amadeus usually is not my cup of tea. They play very oldfashioned,  with extreme feeling and sentimentality. I understand the characterization as unctuous and saccharine here, but my interpretation of it is rather a kind of oldfashioned sentimentality as one sometimes can see in old oictures, and a quality that I somehow find suits Brahms to a t.

A long wished recording, I ordered today.
