Put it in the basket and see. If you don't like what you see, don't finalize the order.

This is just about the only way to find out.

Thanks, Elgarian.  Just sent an email inquiry.  The Minkowski's Handel Giulio Cesare has been a pleasant surprise, considering I really was not impressed with his Handel's Italian Cantatas.  I will probably have to get his Ariodante now since the only version I have is the version by Raymond Leppard.  I have the recording on both LP and CD ...     ;D

I think the blame for the dodgy Italian Cantatas CD is more Kozena's (fan though I am of her best work) than Minkowski's.

Don't overlook the McGegan Ariodante. Lorraine Hunt-Lieberson is magnificent as Ariodante.

I somehow have the highlight for McGegan's Handel Ariodante.  Not sure why I bought only the highlight since that is not how I usually buy music.  I have a good number of Lorraine Hunt's recordings.  She was an excellent mezzo-soprano.

This arrived this morning, chosen from the Hyperion 'bottom ten' bargains a few days ago.

I listened to it while eating my lunch - what a smashing collection this is, and how on earth has it arrived in Hyperion's least popular list of ten? Just take a listen to the sample of the lovely Gillian Fisher singing 'Long May she reign' (track 5), here:
http://www.hyperion-records.co.uk/al.asp?al=CDA66494&f=purcell%20odes

Afterwards I checked the Hyperion website, and sure enough there's a new list of ten:

http://www.hyperion-records.co.uk/o.asp?o=1016

from which I selected the following bargains:

This put me within spitting distance of the total needed for a 10% discount, so I hunted around the Helios recordings and found this gorgeous collection, turning my bargains into bargain bargains:

I just jumped the gun on these and ordered them from Gaudisc in Spain.

Considering the relative rarity (and high desirability) of the items and prices elsewhere, €57 delivered for two 3CDsets is quite satisfactory.  :)

This will beef up my Early Music collection with some box sets by the rare but high quality Spanish Cantus label. They have a new website that is still under development, which is unfortunate because direct-ordering is not yet available again.

A Machaut set: (click pictures for details)

It has these three discs:

The other 3CD set is with Spanish Renaissance music:

PS: For those who really want to splash out on French Medieval Music, there is this 7CD set, which includes the Machaut discs! :)

Very interesting acquisitions.  I went through my shopping spree early this year when I bought some 20 CD's between Byrd, Fayrfax and Ockeghem.  For the next few months, MDT is having sales on GIMELL, a label that specializes in early music, time to take a look and see what it has to offer ...

"In 1903, the Paris branch of the Gramophone and Typewriter Company made 27 incredibly important piano records. These documented the pianism of Edvard Grieg (1843–1907) and Raoul Pugno (1852–1914). The Grieg and Pugno recordings are some of the most rare and sought after discs and are unfortunately some of the most primitive and problematic. We are pleased to say that very recent technology has allowed us to greatly reduce these problems to produce these recordings in startlingly improved versions. This set also includes the equally rare 1904 G&T sides (five in total) of Camille Saint-Saëns (1835–1921) playing various selections from his own works, the eight sides Saint-Saëns recorded for the Gramophone Company in 1919, and other important piano recordings made by G&T."

Very interesting, George. Although I'm not a historical recordings person, I think I might make an excuse for such a collection. Where did you get it from?
