Andrei my friend, you boxed your ears with this piano concerto extravaganza. Tomorrow you will have a serious migraine. ;D ;D

Thread duty.

Maria Dragomiroiu.
Cantece de Petrecere.
Mai intoarce, Doamne, Roata.

I keep my contacts in Romania very close, for they keep sending me such nice music. Not all the numbers on this CD are top notch, but most of them are.

Excellent recording.  A few years back, I got a Bach box set on Naxos which
included these works.  I also prefer the Telemann's Darmstadt Overtures performed by Helmust Muller-Bruhl and Cologne Chamber Orchestra over the same work performed by Nikolaus Harnoncourt and his Concentus Musicus.  I strongly recommend you check out that recording.

Don't worry, I just love how the piano and orchestra sound together and I'm never tired of hearing them. Besides, tonight I'll have the perfect antidote: Bruckner's Fourth.  ;D

Hey, for that you need to have at your side either a bottle of tzuica or one of Tamaioasa Romaneasca, if you know what I mean.  :D

Superb recordings of consistently fine performances, Dave.  Don't know if a box set is planned--if so, not until quite some time after the 8th is released this fall.  Lower prices available from some Amazon marketplace sellers.  I've waxed euphoric over this set elsewhere--every single recording so far is among my favorites--even the DLVDE with a baritone instead of an alto!--and if I could take only one cycle to the desert island, this would probably be the one.  Suggest you give one a try--whichever of Mahler's symphonies is your fave, or whichever your collection is weak in--and see how you get on with it before taking the plunge.  As for me, I think the strongest are 4-5-6-7 and DLVDE (my favorites), though 1-2-3-9 are all good enough that I could be happy with them if they were the only recordings of those symphonies I were allowed to keep..............

David - thanks for taking the time to comment on this MTT series and giving such a positive endorsement; own just one 'complete' set and then another 'mixed' set w/ 6-7 different conductors, so would love to simplify the latter - will definitely add to my 'wish list' and check out the prices.  Thanks again - Dave  :)

Operetta in three acts.
Libretto Gustav David & Max Kalbeck.
Complete recording in the German language.

What a feast indeed, this beautiful recording. A real gem, that has all the ingredients to be a successful in every respect. Fine soloists, excellent conductor, and a good recording. The libretto is well written.

Thinking about listening to some Nielsen -- the VC, specifically.

Herzogenberg, Heinrich von - Piano Quartets & String Trios w/ the Belcanto Strings & Andreas Frolich on piano.  Excellent CPO bargain, i.e. 2 discs for the price of one in a slim 1-CD jewel box (packaging that I like!) - of course, he admired and was friends w/ Brahms (Herzogenberg's wife had taken piano lessons from the latter) - so, this is late romantic & quite Brahmsian -  :D

Carl Nielsen
Concerto for Violin, FS 61, Op. 33
James Ehnes|BBC Philharmonic|Vassily Sinaisky

Live| 7 March 2009
Bridgewater Hall, Manchester

I remember trying to listen to this concerto many months ago, long before I "officially discovered" Nielsen with the 5th symphony. I turned it off before it could end. A few days ago I sampled the work again on YouTube (just the first movement, actually) and immediately had a new entrant to my list of favourite violin concerti. :)

What am I listening to?

NOT this:

>:( >:( >:( >:(

I ordered this about a couple of years ago and got it sent to my dad's; my sister then borrowed it, and I've only just rediscovered it at my sister's. I've been looking forward to hearing the legendary Mahler 6 for quite some time now. What's in the Disc One side? Some Andy Williams disc my dad burned. GRRRRRRRRR >:( >:( >:( >:(

(Actually, the whole situation is quite funny).

Durch alle Töne tönet
Im bunten Erdentraum
Ein leiser Ton gezogen
Für den der heimlich lauschet.

Well, I now have (w/ the 2 'new' discs shown above) about a half dozen CDs of Herzogenberg's music, all chamber works except for one excellent disc of solo & duo piano pieces.  Checking his output in the Wiki article HERE, I don't see a Piano Concerto, but some Symphonies that I've not heard.

However, the chamber works I own are all on CPO (well performed & recorded), and include Piano Trios, Cello Sonatas, & Wind Quintet/Trio - Dave  :)

Liner notes are at home and the CD doesn't tell me much.  ::)

It should be a law all CD manufacturers should have to print all the info (including which tracks correspond with which works) on the CD face.  :-\
