I don't think classical music has become an all-consuming passion for me yet ...    :D

;D

btw I've been listening to the WTC as well.  Breaking it in though, when taken individually one prelude & fugue at a time I can make sense of it.  There is deep melancholy in the minor key ones. :)

Difficult to say how to pronounce Leeuw, I know of course, it´s something like Liieeuw (i sounds as i in "it"). It's the word for lion in dutch. Accent is on "Rein".

Thanks, Henk. Those dutch names are so complicated.

Anyway, Reinbert de Leeuw is the best performer of Satie that I know (if you are not in a hurry  ;D).

Which WTC recording are you listening to?

Berben from the brilliant classics set on harpsichord.  He is no Leonhardt, but right now he's all I have. :)

Brian,  You clearly are not too hung up on HIP vs non-HIP.  Is that right?

I love this recording--

It really captures the rhythmic drive of this fine symphony. :)

I do not have the Leonhardt version either.  I have the WTC performed on harpsichord by van Asperen, Jaccottet, Kirkpatrick and (IIRC) Pieter-Jan Belder (I have that mammoth 155-CD Bach set on BC).  Most recently released WTC recordings are on piano ...

Oh you have Berben and not Belder.  I made that same mistake on this very thread, and didn't catch it until later.  Berben did the WTC for the BC set, Belder did most of the keyboard stuff but Berben handled that one. :)

I guess Leonhardt's WTC doesn't appear in that neat Leonhardt box set?

No.  It might have been a licensing issue since Leonhardt might have only recorded WTC with TELDEC.

I bought that 80-CD Gould set, which has the WTC.  I actually have more WTC versions performed on piano than on harpsichord.

Ah fooey!  He leaves alot of harpsichordists in the dust with a moody atmosphere the others don't convey.  I think a friend sent me a burn, I think that's how I heard it.  My memory is a little foggy, but I remember the playing.  Well those Teldec releases show up periodically at BRO which is pretty cool. :)

I was favorably impressed with BRO after my first order, which arrived this past Saturday.  There were no cracked jewel cases.   :o

Not sure if the Leonhardt's WTC will be available at BRO since the latter generally only stocks slow movers.

I'm pretty sure I do too - but I just noticed that I have a cassette tape of Leonhardt playing the Art of Fugue - so that will be something I will dig out soon.
