Mahler

Symphony No. 1 in D major

Tennstedt
LPO
EMI Classics

Haven't listened to this one in a long time.....and it's sounding pretty dang great!  :)

That was one of the first CDs of that piece I ever heard, and I still have a great affection for it, and for Tennstedt's recordings in general.

Last night listened to:

Three Images of Laughter (Hua Xia Ensemble) - Music by contemporary Chinese composers written for traditional Chinese instruments.  The title work is by Qigang Chen, intended to evoke various types of laughter, not all happy.  This superb group also recorded it live, on a disc of Qigang's music, and it's well worth having two versions.

He is.

EDIT: Do you mean Dvorak or Queyras? Dvorak's my favorite. Queyras is my second-favorite for the Cello Concerto, behind Fournier, who will be the last participant of the birthday marathon. :)

Oh why didn't I know this. Big D's birth anniversary, that is.

Anyway, tomorrow (today for me) will be 09/09/'09 -- even for those of you in the U.S.! :D I was planning to listen to a stream of ninths, but it appears that I'll come home later than usual and have time for maybe one ninth. (Stupid composers and their nearly-an-hour-or-more-long ninth symphonies. The summation of a lifetime of composing my foot! >:()

Navneeth

Well, to save time, rather than a bunch of Ninth symphonies, how about some 9-minute pieces:D

Nice idea, Bruce. :) But it would take too much work to sieve through the timings. Maybe the 9th P&F from the WTC, Contrapunctus No. 9 from the AoF (a perennial favourite), LvB's 9th PS and SQ, and things like that.
