Elly Ameling is always superb when it comes to German lieders ...

Schutz: St. Luke's Passion (Scheier, etc.)

Wonderful stuff. Took me a while to get used to what sounded like a 61 minute recitative. It did not work too well as early morning drive music. But in the evening it's much better!

LOL, Lutheran asceticism is even better at 3 am. Try it some time! :D

Is this the reincarnation?

Yes!

Orpheus and Coopmv, if possible, I strongly recommend the new Norrington set, with the SWR Stuttgart orchestra, over the old one with the London Classical Players. The new one is on modern instruments, but with many period-"style" practices. More importantly, though, Norrington's view of these nine symphonies has matured considerably; his interpretations are more energetic, the orchestra is better, and the sound quality is vastly improved. Unfortunately, the SWR cycle markets for about $60-70; if you ever see it at reduced price, snap it up!

Possibly.  I only bought the Beethoven 9th by Norrington.

Brian,

I already have the cycles by Hogwood and Gardiner.  With the planned purchase of the cycles by Klemperer and Colin Davis before the end of the year, I will have some 20 Beethoven cycles.

For all the Beethoven cycles I have:
Own the box sets - Abbado ("Rome"), Barenboim, Hogwood, Karajan 1962-3, Mackerras 2007, Norrington London Classical Players.
MP3 downloads etc. - Gardiner, Harnoncourt, Immerseel
MP3 burned CDs, gift of a GMG member - Vanska

I have MP3 downloads of Norrington's Stuttgart 3 and 9, and am collecting individual volumes of the ongoing Paavo Jarvi series on physical SACDs.
In addition, through my Naxos Music Library subscription, I can listen on-demand to the full cycles of Norrington in Stuttgart and quite a few others.

I do not have the cycles by Abbado, Barenboim and Mackerras, though I think I could be interested in the Mackerras' version.  Which Mackerras' version do you have?  I think he recorded 2 cycles.

This has consumed my Sunday listening with my third listening today.  Wow.....I'm pretty shot. Time to take it out before it buries me.  Great listening day!
