Saw on Arte Channel the 4th symphony by Mahler, performed by the Wiener Philharmoniker, under Berstein. a recording from the early seventies I think, seeing how young he still was.
What surprised me that I found it totally fascinating, altough it tired me out.
The very fast tempi, and accents, quite a experience.

Britannia were 'giving' the whole set away earlier on in the year.  I picked mine up for under £33 for the 10 dvd set.  Including Das Lied.

I prefer the Sony and DVD 4th to the DG 4th.  I could, and still can't get to grips with Witteck the boy soprano, just doesn't do it for me.  I could never relate to that performance ending.  Many, do however like it  ;D

Edit:  I should say, I bought two sets and sold one for £65 on eBay, so I got my set for nothing really  ;)

Aye, I didn't see the other thread before lobbing it in here.

Super Bargain by the way!!

One thing with the 1970's you can't half tell its the seventies just looking at the fashion, especially the audience for the Resurrection, at Ely Cathedral  ;D

Forget Bernstein for Mahler 4. I also think that is true for his Mahler 2s, 6s, and 8s.

I have Bernstein's performance of the Fourth on a Columbia LP.  I like the performance, but the LP is mono and has a few minor scratches in it; I still need to get the CD reissue of this performance.
