Now playing CD5 from this set.  This set has been very rewarding (still 14 CD's to go).  The playing has been excellent and Christopher Hogwood executed well.  With Monica Huggett and Catherine MacKintosh on the AAM that recorded this set, how can it go wrong?  HIP performance or not, this is the best comprehensive Mozart symphonic set out there, period.

The second disc from this box, and still being excellent.

Stuart, are you listening to different versions of the some (all?) of the symphonies back-to-back? (Assuming it's arranged in that way.)

Thread duty:

Wolfie
Symphony No. 29 in A major, K. 201
Prague Chamber Orchestra|Charles Mackerras

CD5 in the Hogwood set actually includes Symphonies Nos 18-19 plus Symphony in D major.  I would not even try to guess the order in which symphonies were arranged for the same works in different version.  I have the Mackerras' version on Telarc for a number of years.  It is a very refreshing version among those performed on modern instruments.

1,2 & 7

I have to bump up this set to the front of my wish list as I love Blomstedt recordings.  He was the best conductor the SFO has ever had.  I really do not like MTT too much.

Someone here (Gurn, possibly) said that Hogwood and team present both version of the symphonies. (With and without certain wind instruments in the score and things of that nature, and hence the size of 19 CDs.) :)

Mackerras was my introduction to most of the famous symphonies by Mozart. I started out by listening to an Internet stream -- from your neck of the woods, actually -- and their choice of recordings were from this set. :) In fact, many of the choicest selections for other works were from Telarc. ;D

I have never owned the earlier Hogwood's box or I would be hesitant to get this 19-CD set.  BTW, I would watch out if Adam Fischer ever records the full Mozart symphonic cycle.  What a bang-up job he did with the Haydn Complete Symphonies?  It was thoroughly enjoyable.  I painstakingly bought the individual boxes on Nimbus, not the mega-box on BC ...

There is a important Stravinsky quote somewhere here ;).

BTW, the grammar Nazi in me cannot keep silent: Mr. Carter's name is misspelled in your signature.  >:D

Good for you!  YOU get the Q-P doll!

Hi Dave, how is Fischer's music? It is interesting, how does it compare with others from the period? :)

Hello Que - I've listened to that Fischer disc at least 4 times since my acquisition - unusual for me w/ a harpsichord performance - the music was published in the late 1690s, and is composed in the late Baroque-French style, so mostly suites w/ 'dance movements - inventive and varied melodies lasting nearly 80 mins.

Martynova (new to me) obviously is enjoying the music and plays beautifully; as mentioned the recording is superb even on my standard system (the disc is SACD, so I cannot comment on that layer); finally, I really like the sound and pleasantness of the instrument used (built by William Dowd after a French model in the USA, 1970s).

I would have no hesitation in recommending this disc to someone reluctant in exploring Baroque harpsichord music - cannot imagine the recording not winning one over; again, my purchase was based on an excellent review in the American Record Guide a few months ago - Dave  :D

I managed to find a crosscountry route from my town to the next one a few miles away, then got lost in some incredibly wet fields and copses - good times. I'm not a big orchestral Rach fan, but as a soundtrack to drowning in mud, it works.

Boccherini, Luigi - String Trios w/ La Real Camar & Quintets/Symphonies w/ Savall et al!  :D

np: Vasks violin concerto (Kremer, despite not having heard half the recordings of this piece, I cannot imagine how on earth anybody could better the two pieces on this disc) before I go to bed.
