I am new here and new to classical music. I just discovered classical while looking for an escape from mainstream radio...happened on to NPR..piqued my interest...so I started with a purchasing few string quartets. I have been ripping them to my newly acquired discless music system...now I can't get enough. I found this forum after a reco from audiocircle and love coming here when looking for something to add to my modest collection(about 60 cd's and growing).

I am attending my first concert next week in Kansas City to see the KC Chamber Orchestra perform Vivaldi's Four Seasons.  My wife who has no interest in classical is taking a music class and one of her requirements was to attend an acoustic concert...I recommended the above..my 13 y/o son heard us talking..so I put a Vivaldi  cd on and he wants to go too.  Hopefully I can get them both hooked.

Welcome, scp, ... and good luck with your recruiting efforts!

My wife was "hooked" when she first heard Mozart's Clarinet Quintet.  ( Just sayin'... )

Welcome; sounds like you have a wonderful exploration in front of you (and your family).

I'll only offer one bit of advice, don't pay too much attention to the various ideological "camps" that exist on this (or any similar) online forum, and trust your ears and intuition.  Reacting to music is a very personal thing and the same piece will strike two people differently, so if something is not to your taste, no matter how often you read how great it is, don't worry about it, just follow your bliss.

scp

Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome and all the advice...I will give a report after the concert.

I will be mostly lurking and learning.

Hi Barry, and welcome to GMG.  And good luck, both with the concert and with encouraging your family.  Hope that Vivaldi does the trick!

No problem with that; my roommate does the same thing!
Just let us know if we get too rowdy. ;-)
