Yes they do fit in with the cd if you handle things carefully.  I usually sandwich
the cd in between the booklet and the inlay card (w/both spines folded in) and
then send them all in the sleeve.  You can store cd in a separate sleeve if you
are worried about scratches.  With something like a two-sided, fabric cd sleeves
fabric cd sleeves
I can even fit a two-cd set, booklet and inlay card all into a 120 micron transparent
sleeve.  ;D

Those are the same ones that Staples offers. I bet Staples is cheaper though.

How about these from Jazz Loft?

CD Sleeves

They are fine but you would have to be careful with one of the spines of
the inlay card which gets snapped off if held in a gatefold style sleeve
like this and handled a few times too many.  I use them in Taiwan and
that is what happened to some of my cd albums.   :-[

Even cheaper in Taiwan = $1 for 75.

But don't think deal is so good after postage etc.  ;D

Just hope and pray you and your Frau don't have an accident . . . .

I don't want to think about it...that would be a disaster. Hmmm....we do have some closet space still empty. We could always park a kid there, I suppose...and pitch a tent in the garden when it's a bit older  ;D

Sell all you have, give the money to the poor and never buy another CD again. This way, you'll save room... and your soul.  0:)

Without music I have no soul. :(

Storage is a must. :)

This is something that I have given a great deal of thought to.  I don't know about European products, but here in the USA there are many sleeves manufactured specifically for this purpose.  I use a combination of the jewelsleeve which is (unfortunately) polyvinyl with a safety liner for the cd.  Unless the sleeve is exposed to high heat, it will not be a problem. I like it because it also has room for the tray card as well as the booklet.  Mark, those Jazzloft sleeves are also vinyl and they have no liner so for me that was a disqualification. Another company that I found online (Univenture) manufactures all sorts of polypropylene products, and I found this multi disc wallet which holds 4 cds and has room for a booklet in front and the traycard (just) with ends folded in back.  I use it for box sets and it's very compact as all the tray cards can be put in the same back space.  The cd holding sleeves not only are lined with a safety cloth like material which keeps dust away from the cds, but also has a top flap to keep dust out of the sleeve.  The same company also makes single disc polypropylene sleeves, that hold one cd and 2 graphics, but I had already committed to the jewelsleeves.  I ordered a huge amount of these little 4 cd wallets so the price per piece wasn't bad.  The third picture is the jewelsleeve.  MMStorage storage also make sleeves called the DiscSox which is actually almost a patent infringement of the jewelsleeve.  It's also polyvinyl with a "safety" liner and can hold up to 2 cds with 2 graphics (booklet and traycard), but you have to put the booklet in the same pocket with one of the cds.  They also make a larger sleeve to accomodate movie dvds.  The polyvinyl they use isn't as good as the one used by jewelsleeve, and they're a bit more expensive to boot.

I just keep buying portable shelves. LOL.  Actually I got so many freaking DVDs that I just started using some portable bin-drawers for CDs and converted the shelf unit to a DVD shelf by turning it sideways.  My music collection (i.e. MP3s) is much, much larger, if I start running out of space, I have to start being selective.  When I move out after college, I don't think space will be an issue--my collection is not THAT big.

bookshelves

D Minor has a great solution!  My option also - fortunately, I do woodworking and build storage units to fit existing bookshelves or which I can attach to a wall - but as my collection has expanded, I've moved into other rooms; of course, this becomes a MAJOR problem once your CD numbers reach into the thousands!  ;D

Not at all. If you can't make the best possible use of space, you have to adapt what you own to the space you have to put it in. I believe in reviewing the entire collection once or twice a year to ferret out duplicates and unwanted recordings. Then you sell them on eBay, donate them to a library, or give 'em away as you see fit. I sold 100 CDs to fellow GMGs last year, as well as a good many duplicate scores. And I haven't missed one of them. I'll probably do the same later this year.

That's my method too, and careful buying. Let's face it: of all what we buy, several items will inevitably be duds or one-offs. I have no trouble parting with them and have, like Laryy, never missed one of them.
The CD's I keep go on bookshelves: takes maybe more space than downloads and sleeves, but saves time and I like to keep my CD's as they are. :)

I don't want to repackage CDs; I want to keep my jewel boxes, though I think it may be time for us to start lobbying record companies to put out their sets in thinner boxes.  It is ridiculous that the Barshai set of the Shostakovich symphonies is about 4 inches wide, whereas the Haitink and Rostropovich sets are each less than an inch thick.

Those in North America might want to try Racks and Stands, which has these:

My cd storage solution?

I am seriously considering buying an ipod to solve my storage problems, question is which one? Anybody familiar with the ipod video? can you download/import operas on it and connect it to a television? or is this not possible?

Yes, you can put all manner of video content onto an iPod ... or indeed, any of the video-equipped digital players available. You might want to research brands such as Creative, Archos, iAudio and iRiver as well as the iPod before making your decision. These brands - particularly Archos - are as renowned in this field as is Apple. :)

This may only work for a short while for some people.  I can never cull and sell as quickly as I buy, so compact storage does become a pressing need for me.   :)

Those cabinets from a Canadian company have been shown on the previous GMG and I have not changed. Best solution ever:
