Three eery, misty, early Saturday morning concertos. Holmboe's just wonderful. And a good morning too!

... music is not only an 'entertainment', nor a mere luxury, but a necessity of the spiritual if not of the physical life, an opening of those magic casements through which we can catch a glimpse of that country where ultimate reality will be found.    RVW, 1948

Another Holmboe disc I don't have... :-[

Hagen, Bernhard (1720-1787) - Lute Trios - lute, violin, & cello w/ John Schneiderman on the lute - absolutely pleasant music and disc; good to listen to seriously or pleasant dinner music; I just cannot imagine 'how much' of this superb music remains to be discovered and recorded - highly recommended for the genre!  :D

Nice! I'm very much into lute music as well, lately! :) What's the label on that recording, Dave? :)

Bantock: Orchestral Works

Lush, beautiful  0:)

Night Ride and Sunrise is better than I recalled. A little more advanced from his early style of En Saga, etc. Segerstam treats it extremely well, allowing it the full-hearted playing it deserves.

Mopping up some items left unlistened in this set. This morning an outing to the Iberian early Baroque repertoire with music by Portuguese João Lourenço Rebelo (1610-1661). I had never heard of him before but Van Nevel sems to have a keen eye (ear) for quality! :)

I didn't expect the association, but the choral textures in this are reminding me of Philip Glass. It's wonderful music so far.

MICHAEL TIPPETT:       The Midsummer Marriage, opera          / Covent Garden, Colin Davis

The music has an extraordinary beauty. But the characters seem abstract, with no human dimension, except the couple Jack/Bella. The libretto, obscure, mixing mythologies, doesn't help.

This is the main difference between Tippett and Britten. The music of Tippett is superior, much more personal and inventive. But he doesn't seem able to create convincing characters. On the contrary, those of Britten are deeply human.

It's remarkable music - the third movement of Last Pagan Rites I have not heard anything similar to in classical music - it is extremely folky in tone, and genuine in application - I don't think that many composers would dare write such a repetitive vocal line, but it's beautiful.
