How difficult would it be for us to go through the GMG archives and compile a "best" recordings list for the major masterpieces? Maybe volunteers could each take a composer for this research. We could use the top two or three recordings for each piece based on GMG popularity. Then when someone asks what we like for such-and-so work, we plaster that baby up. And of course, after it's "done", we could fight about it, and even argue whether a particular new recording should supplant an older choice.

Just a thought.

I was actually looking over a couple of threads on Bartok SQs recently and was surprised to see that there did seem to be a majority consensus on the Emerson Quartet.  I was surprised.  I haven't heard them in Bartok.  Maybe I should. :)

That makes me think that it could be interesting project Mr. Beethovenianianian. ;D

I wish you were alone on your idea.  Let's say that Murray Perahia gets the nod for a major Bach keyboard work; there's no way I'm going to be a member of a website that has Perahia/Bach as its standard.

Diversity is one of the prime qualities here; your plan would damage it.  Also, I agree with Karl that "consensus" sucks.

On the other hand, there would be a ton of arguments, and the venom level would rise.  For the sake of conflict, I'm game.

I think there is a general concensus.

I don't think there is.

Not sure I could do that. Just ones I like.

See what I mean?

Sometimes everyone really has the same opinion, and sometimes it's just everyone agreeing with everyone else.

But just to prove how difficult this could be--there are several works on that listing I wouldn't have included, and many of the rest I would choose different performances.
