Thanks to Antoine and Que.

Am I right in believing, that the 5 CDs, which are recorded by others than van Oort, are the most interesting of the 10 CDs?

It was my impression at least. Bart van Oort is a fine fortepianist, but I think the best part of the set were those three discs with Klavierstücke. BTW, Pieter-Jan Belder is excellent too, as usual.  :)

Thanks, item ordered, only a little more than £10.  :)

SORABJI   Piano Sonata 1        Marc-André Hamelin
This Altarus disc has ONE TRACK, and the total playing time is 22 minutes.
The Sonata sounds like someone has got hold of sheet music with "Stardust" and something by Scriabin and/or Szymanowski overprinted, and is trying to make sense of it all by improvising possible interpretations.

George LLOYD   Piano Music       Martin Roscoe
The Road Through Samarkand, St.Antony and the Bogside Beggar, The Aggressive Fishes, Intercom Baby, An African Shrine
     - a relief to turn to this after the Sorabji.

Interested to hear your impressions.  I've had that set for two or three years but have yet to come to terms with it.

Now playing WT1 on harpichord by Christiane Jaccottet.  Having bought the 40-CD set over a year ago but the only CD's I have listened to so far are the recordings by Jaccottet, who was a first-rate harpsichordists.  The remaining CD's were mostly recordings by some second-rate ensembles.  But my sole objective for getting the set was ONLY the Jaccottet's recordings anyway.

RE:  Rubbra's Symphony Set on Chandos w/ Hickox!

Hi David - I owned just a single CD of Rubbra's Symphonies but read some excellent reviews of the entire set including those on Amazon (8 5* Reviews HERE), so decided to take a chance!

So far, I've just listened to the first 2 discs - the performances are excellent - as to the compositions, well-structured but somewhat repetitive despite the liner notes - I guess that some further & repeated listening will be needed - interested in your thoughts and those of others - thanks for the interest - Dave  :)

A nice introduction by Naxos to Rubbra's chamber and vocal music.  Texts are supplied.

KOECHLIN: Ballade for piano and orchestra; The Seven Stars Symphony  (Douglas Fairbanks, Lilian Harvey, Greta Garbo*, Marlène Dietrich, Emil Jannings, Charlie Chaplin).
* features an Ondes Martenot solo

DVD-First listen/see!

The Carmina Burana is the best I ever heard. Kathleen Battle is adorable, and Thomas Allen is perfectly for his role. The Berliners are in good form, although Ozawa, especially in the first entry of the music, moves a bit squarely around the notes. Beautifully done.

The following piece, the 9th Symphony is a mediocre performance, with a orchestra that moves like a elephant in a porcelain store. Wood winds were obscured by the strings, 8 basses annihilated the coherence, etc.
