No, - never. And if we are out, when the postman tries to deliver some CDs, my wife often is helpful and picks the CDs up at the post office the following day.

Gurn should learn the lesson.   ;)

As I am a single man, I don't have that kind of problems... Just curiosity.  :D

I'm jealous of Premont. If I get the CDs delivered to home I have to intercept the postman before my wife gets to the door - it's a tricky business. But generally speaking I believe in open and honest communication with my wife  ;D

Oh yes, I have nearly all my CD purchases sent to work (do you think that I have a death wish?) - in fact I now have an 'overflow tray' to accomodate the large number of CDs which arrive for me. CDs are of course much easier than LPs to smuggle into the house. My smuggling tendencies developed as an adolescent when I used to creep through the communal gardens to my parent's ground floor flat to my bedroom window, which was always left slightly open for our cats to get in and out - I would then throw the LP that I had just purchased through the window and then appear, all innocent, at the front door a few moments later  ;D

Just now I saw your first reply, vandermolen. That was funny... the trick of the open window is a classic!  :)

Thanks! Yes, my smuggling tendencies developed early on  ;D

As I opened the door, I thought I had everything secure. As I started up the steps, I felt the cd slip out from between my fingers, and I heard that familiar, gut wrenching ::) sound,... crash!,...as the lid goes flying.

I look. The cd is play side up.

ok,... I'm calm. It's only the case,...it's onlt the case...

So, later, I'm playing this cd (which I just got last week), and WHOOMP!, there it is, a nice juicy skip. I look, and, all I see is one mark. I clean it. I play it. It skips again. I realize that the cd hit is such a way a to put a nail point gouge in the cd. It is ruined. I cry.

So, when I wake up from my heartbroken stupor ::), I rrealize that I've never actually broken a cd before. I am grateful that it wasn't something rare. I feel that God love me :-*. Perhaps I liked that cd too much? ??? haha

I just know you have one of those fall-to-your-knees-and-yell-Nooooo!!! moments you're just dying to share, haha!

btw- yes, now it seems as though Amazon.com have been successfully mined, and I am about to embark on Amazons. uk,fr,de,... My first target, a single cd, will cost me $55 to have it shipped to the USA. The second, $40. I feel a nausea stirring my belly. ??? Will it ever end?

I've broken a couple of cases that way  :-[  Never messed up a disk though. I must live right.  0:)

I am pleased that I haven't reached the point of having to shop in Europe (although since the Euro is in the crapper, now would be a good time). Curious how that will go for you. Of course I have bought a variety of things from there, but never a methodical process of ordering from vendors rather than individuals. Good luck with that... :-\

I cheerfully called the bank to get a balance, which I like to do every few days, and the nice young man said,... negative $90!!

An hour later, the fourth young lady comes on and says, "My supervisor has refunded the $105..."

And I'm thinking, You know, that sounds like a lot of money.

Will I ever get those brain cells back, I ask you? :-\

What did the second & third bank person say?

That's the best question that's been asked today. We need to know.

oh,.... they like to play dumb, don't they? I like to ask for ID #s, and supervisors. That usually gets 'em going!

btw- first successful ".uk" and ".fr" purchases. Yes, for two cds it came to about $100!

Which relative's basement do I live in, you ask?

A true GMGer, however, would first enquire about the contents of the CDs. ;)

I have now gone 3 months 1 week without buying any CDs. But the current Presto Classical sale of Regis CDs for $5 each is really testing my determination!

I got a Regis release from Berkshire and it was CD instead of pressed CDs.  Is that standard for Regis?

UPDATE: August 2010

Well, after my recent "shoring up of the stragglers", I haver found myself in a halcyon hurricane's eye of peace. Nothing is "begging" me to buy it. EBAY auctions are skipping by me left and right. I search Amazon in vain, going to the same spots over and over just to look at something.

Practically everything I "need" is now in the $30-60 range,...just for a single cd. And no, I'm not as enthused as I used to be (the last EBAY rejection really hurt me!), so don't even tempt me, haha! Even the word "need" is not working. I really have a lot of the loose ends "shored up good".

I am starting to enjoy Composers that I can dispose of quickly and cheaply. I have two harp chamber works by Jolivet (Chant de Linos and Pastorales de Noel (sic?)), and I wanted to expand. I found a trumpet disc with Heptade ($2.50), and a flute/harp/chamber disc of all-Jolivet (ASV; $9.50), and got both for about $17 (which, of course, is still too much). So, I got almost all of Jolivet's chamber music for about $25. That's the kind of divide and conquer attitude I go with.

However, just in case anyone thinks that I've cured myself,... at the end of the month (I have to time it perfectly!!) I will be doing a international postal hop-scotch for 2 cds, which should put them at about $30 a piece. Ouch!

Sid

I'm not a huge collector, I'm more into going to concerts. I have roughly about 300 cd's and I don't really want to get that much more. I always think before buying a cd whether I'm actually going to listen to it or not (or how many times a year I will listen to it). That's why I don't buy things like complete opera sets, but highlights are ok. Even after 2 years of collecting, I'm getting the feeling of "music overload." I am beginning to have problems in fully enjoying music, because I have discovered so much new things in the past couple of years, it's all been quite sudden. I need time to absorb what I've got, before going off to explore uncharted waters. So now I plan to downsize, and I have been listening more to radio as well as borrowing cd's from my local library, which has a pretty good collection...

Are you saying that from Ancient-Renaissance-Baroque-Classical-20th Century-Jazz-Pop-World-William Shatner-Post Modern-Avant Garde, guilty pleasure, etc.,...you only have the Mighty 300?

If you had said you only had 300 opera highlights, well, then I'd understand! :P

Sid

Well, I'd say about 60-70% of my 300 cd's are C20th, the rest from other eras. I'm not really interested in comparing recordings, I'm more interested in the composer's music. I might buy some more French organ, renaissance, & also want to get more into Charles Ives. I'm having problems with storing cd's, as I don't have that much space, and as I said, I want to spend more money on concerts rather than cd's in the near future...

The new erato

Every time I hear a fine disc, I get ideas for at least two more discs I need to hear to explore this further. Hearing a Handel opera incites me to hear them all, and what abour Porpora and Bononcini? Hearing the fine Carl Vine symphonies gets me wondering "what else has he written equally fine?" and "what about his contemporaneous Australinn colleagues, in what setting did these symphonies occur?

And thus starts a journey ending in.....you all know what.

I'm more into this side of collecting and listening, than the endless search for new (and different) versions of works I know.
