After seeing recently a musically "perfect" but bland Die Walkure production at La Bastille, I felt urged to warm myself with the missing fire. So I relistened the unearthed Keilberth's 1955 "Second Cycle", the one where Martha Modl sings Brunnhilde (and Astrid Varnay is Siglinde).

For me this is one of the most impressive versions of Die Walkure on record. Martha Modl infuses Brunnhilde with a subtle intensity in one of her most moving roles.  The passion of Sieglinde and Siegmund burns with the beautiful voices of Astrid Varnay and Ramon Vinay and Hotter is the ideal Wotan for Modl's expressiveness.
But what also makes this recording so special is how the underrated Keilberth irrupts from the pit, with an intensity and plasticity that only remembers me the La Scala Furtwangler.

Any other impressions ?
