From jpc.de, at a price much too good to pass up, even with the high shipping cost!
GMG purchasing activity seems to have polished off the lot already!

I have never heard anything by Martinu and recent talk of him has gotten my interest!. I have ordered the following 2 chamber music discs :):

Those trios are some of the most successful of the 20th century - not many composers seem to be able to get the balance of a modern piano in a trio working perfectly.

I hope it's not gone forever - that box has been slowly going out of print for a while. I was surprised to see it show up again at such a low price...

Yep, seems to be gone. Amazon DE has a couple of sellers asking €81 ($105) and €90 ($117). How much was JPC asking?

Well, jpc seems to have been cleared out. A couple of Amazon uk sellers still seem to have it.

Is this set particularly good? I notice that the Gramophone and Penguin Guides are merely lukewarm about them - not that I'm suggesting they should have the last word - I merely report the fact.

They're much better than that, IMO. I am not a huge fan of Brüggen in general - his Beethoven cycle I don't find as essential as some, but his Haydn strikes a fine balance between the* devil may care Goodman, mechanical Pinnock, lyrical Kuijken, and brusk Weil. It's maybe not quite as good as Hogwood for a middle-ground and naturalistic approach, but it's a damn sight cheaper.

As generalizations go, not bad  ;) I don't disagree...in general  ;D  I don't know Brüggen's Paris and London, but do own the Sturm und drang box and they are among my favorites...which actually isn't saying anything since I think each of the cycles (Solomons, Weil, Hogwood, Goodman, Pinnock) has merit. I think David likes Brüggen's Beethoven (I do too), making his Haydn a natural choice.

Pithy and reasonably on target...no apology necessary!

Yep, I'm a big fan of his Beethoven, perhaps my favorite set of The Nine, and also of the couple of his Haydn discs I already have.  Given Alan's report, I'm glad I hastened to place the order!

I have a couple of the original discs and was glad to still have squeezed in there, at €19.99  ;D

This arrived today and ....Arggghhh!!!! I ordered the wrong recording. I wanted Solti's LSO peformances from the 60s. Oh well. It's still Solti.

It's the same coupling, so easy to make the mistake.

I've never been able to find Solti's MSPC with the LSO on CD.  It was a Decca LP  coupled with the Miraculous Mandarin Suite.  There's an LPO recording in a box set, but the LSO one is MIA.  Odd that such an excellent stereo recording would remain unissued on CD.

Talking about this one?

The one Sarge wanted was presumably this one?

Especially so with my old eyes and Decca's cover which is dark print on a dark background. I should have read the fine print.

Yeah, it was. In any case, the newer digital recording and performances aren't bad and, according to Gramophone, Solti revised his tempo in the second movement of the Concerto to reflect Bartok's true intentions.

This Japanese issue you linked is an SACD, with an extra fill up of the Mandarin Suite that was on the LP I mentioned, but no MSPC.

I've got both of these, Sarge: magic!

I haven't seen a single dissenting opinion. They must be good  8)
