I've been enjoying Villa-Lobos' Bachianas Brasileiras and especially his string quartets lately, so I decided to add significantly to my Villa-Lobos collection and I've just ordered these....

All excellent recordings that have brought me a lot of happiness and I suspect they will for you as well. :)

The Piano Concertos and Symphonies are of varying quality in my opinion. I enjoy Symphonies Nos. 3, 4, 6, & 10 and I like Piano Concertos Nos. 3-5.

The Bachianas Brasileiras and Choros are very high quality. The Choros Nos. 6 & 8-11 are some of the finest compositions in VL's output I think. Forest of the Amazon is a delightful work full of exciting rhythms, melodies, and lush orchestration. That recording with Heller and Fleming is amazing.

Just some recommendations, after you soak up these recordings, then you must try Robert Duarte's recordings on Marco Polo. He performs with the Slovak Radio Symphony some very seldom heard VL orchestral works like Genesis, Discovery of Brazil Suites Nos. 1-4, Ruda, Erosao, among others. These recordings might be a little harder to find now, but they're definitely worth your time if you enjoy VL's sound world. I consider them essential listening for VL fans.

Happy listening!  8)

J. S. Bach - Das Orgelbüchlein vol. I - Rübsam - Naxos
Spatial distortion is a serious problem deteriorating headphone listening.
Crossfeeders reduce spatial distortion and make the sound more natural
and less tiresome in headphone listening.

Thanks for the comments and recommendations.  :)
Martha doesn't signal when the orchestra comes in, she's just pursing her lips.

J. S. Bach - Das Orgelbüchlein vol. I - Rübsam - Naxos

Does anyone know if Rübsam ever recorded the Complete Bach Organ Works on Naxos?

Just placed an order this morning on this Mahler set, whose price is just irresistible and it is on Philips, my favorite classical label in terms of recording quality and featuring Bernard Haitink and Elly Ameling, two of my favorite Dutch artists. This will be the equivalent of the 4th Mahler cycle for me. Perhaps my perspective in life has changed so much since I never liked Mahler even ten years ago ...

Well, I don't know if something is missing. Maybe.

Yes. the Neumeister Chorales and a lot of the miscellaneous chorales are missing and some ascriptions among the chorale free works, but still Rübsams Naxos set is more "complete" than either of Walchas two sets.
Reality trumps our fantasy far beyond imagination.

You are quite welcome. You might want to checkout this site if you have some time. Some very interesting information regarding Villa-Lobos' music and life:

Not just Ameling.  Maureen Forrester is the soloist on the Third, which I am  (more or less coincidentally) listening to now,  as part of the DG Complete Mahler set.   Still on the first movement, but so far very good!

Just bought:

Sergeant Rock

Strauss and Schönberg in the mail today. Scarpia's description of Arnie's Op.29 in the waltz thread intrigued me. After listening to clips at JPC, I went for Sieghart's version because I liked what his band does with the Kaiserwalzer transcription. In the Strauss thread, both good and bad things were said about the Fleming/Eschenbach disc but then, one man's poison is another man's medicine. And Brilliant is making it easy and inexpensive for me to complete my Sinopoli/Strauss collection.

A lot to like in there, Sarge!

Besides the Op.29, I'm particularly keen to hear Gielen's Second Chamber Symphony. I've only had one other recording these some 40 years of collecting. The Schönberg was a bargain too: the two discs were only 8 Euro in total  8)

Interesting--I've got the Brilliant Opera Collection website open now in another tab, trying to download a libretto (it's not cooperating at the moment) and it lists five Strauss operas--Ariadne, Rosenkavalier, Frau ohne Schatten, Elektra and Salome.  But not Friedenstag.

Found a good price on this:

Since there is only minimal overlap with my existing collection (most of which can be remedied by selling off individual duplicate discs) I went for it, as it contains a number of recordings I've been meaning to get for a while (Mehta 2, Haitink 3 I, Boulez 4, Abbado 6 II, Chailly 10, etc.). Though, upon listening to Lenny's VPO 5th after letting another nine years pass by since the last listen, I still can't say I like it any more than the first time I heard it.

A wonderful set.

I think you're the one who mentioned this one to me Daverz, so kudos for that! :) I look forward to hearing it.

Purchased these pretty much to have some reference recordings to compare to my own playing.

Seemed like a good idea. The Op.35 are staple etudes in the repertoire. I listened to Op35No1 in a sound sample and it seems a bit fast but it will be an interesting listen all the same.
