Good morning all!  :D  I've not been posting much lately because of the acquisition of a couple of traveling electronic devices, i.e. iPod (2nd generation w/ Wi-Fi; gift of son) to replace my aged Palm Tungsten & a 'new' Garmin GPS (Nuvi 1300) - next weekend off to a trip to Maine and plan to use both!  :D

But I've been loading a 'crap load' of ripped music on the iPod, mainly non-classical (for Harpo) and some 'gentle' classical chamber music; below are 4 chamber discs put on the device - testing each w/ my den stereo system - sound DAMN good to me -   ;D

Brahmsian

Brahms

Piano Sonata No. 2 in F sharp minor, Op.2
Piano Sonata No. 3 in F minor, Op.5

Alan Weiss, piano

Oh yes, it's Brahms for breakfast!  :)

Dave,  This is an excellent CD I have owned for a number of years.  I have every Albinoni CD by the Collegium Musicum 90 on Chandos.  Simon Standage was the onetime lead violinist with the English Concert under Trevor Pinnock.

Thank you Que, very illuminating, ordered them too.

More early music.  Now playing this CD for a first listen ...

Just about done with listening to all the early music ordered recently.  Now playing this CD ...

Listening to Dance Suite right now. Boulez was a master of Bartok's idiom in my opinion. I own his whole Bartok series and they are all fantastic.

Piano Sonatas Op.2 and Op. 5

Interesting.  Are those studio or live recordings, and from when?

Coopmv

Now playing CD5 - works of Grieg from this set for a first listen ...

It is nice to own CD's that are OOP.  I bought this CD probably 20 years ago and believe it is OOP as well ...

Scarpia

Listened to Prokofiev symphonies 2 and 3, Jarvi's recording on Chandos.  Neither made a terribly good impression after a few listenings.

Symphony No 2 has an odd two movement form, the first movement unrelenting harshness, the second a very extended theme and variations (sort of like Beethoven's last piano sonata, as is pointed out in the notes).  There were striking sonorities and orchestral effects throughout, but I it didn't grab me.  Maybe in the future I will try a different recording.

Symphony No 3 was assembled from fragments of Prokofiev's Opera "The Feiry Angel."  Again, seemed episodic, like a suite.  Despite striking effects, orchestration, etc, I missed a sense of symphonic development of themes.  Perhaps I'm just missing it.  Again, someday I'll revisit with a different recording.

Yeah, we all know how hard it is to please you, Mr. Extreme Classical Knowledge.  ::)
