The 'top x' joke has been done to death. Can we stop now please?

Pretty please. Genuine top x things might seem pointless to some, one top x joke is funny, but now it's getting silly.

Seconded. Please delete threads/polls by removing opening post, and think of some interesting topics to talk about. Given the symptoms of boredom we are witnessing here, we really could use some new nice & original threads!  :)

I agree...along with posts that just give the name of a favourite something, but no reasons.

As to deletion, the originator can only delete a thread if no one has replied to the initial post. But if any originators want their threads deleted, then if there is nothing substantive by other posters, it will be done.

It's not a question of not discussing favourite works/recordings, but the constant 'Top this, Top that ...' which has become a bore. Talking about our favourite works or recordings is surely partly why we all come here, no?

OTOH, there may be some salutary, salubrious benefit to having GMG purge itself of these impulses in one fell swoop (assuming that we are one collective organism capable of purging) ........

Moreover, there's nothing to prevent a person from starting a new thread on an intellectually stimulating topic ........ So as to rise above the mediocrity that currently pervades and permeates most GMG threads started within the past week ........

Mozart

I think you guys are unaware that lazy summer afternoons have begun..

techniquest

Permit me to clarify. I have no issue with genuine top x topics, or favourite this, favourite that. What I'm asking for is a stop to the joke or silly top x threads e.g: top 555 Scarlatti sonatas; top 16 & 2 thirds sonatas for bassoon & cello; top 5 topx lists. As I say - one of these amid genuine top x threads is funny, but come on. Enough's enough.
As for lazy summer afternoons? It's raining.

Mozart

It probably wont stop till we get past every composer. Favorite 600 schubert lieder and favorite 626 mozart works..

Rain in Tijuana Mexico? Maybe once a year..

A very good point.

Unless this here is supposed to be one of the new, intellectually stimulating ones? ;)

If each of the complainers stop littering this thread and instead start 2-3 new threads, the "top" threads are likely to be drowned almost immediately. Also, may I point out that there are many extremely interesting, intellectually stimulating topics already open for discussion, only no one is contributing! Bump half of those, and you've got the "top" threads out of the way.

In the meantime, let me go to the Opera and Vocal room, which IMHO is in desperate need of a "Your 6 top German language operas" thread... 0:)

Cheers,
Maciek

We already had the best Beethoven Opera there...so of course, that thread did not have far to travel.

Only if can you give the top 10 reasons for stopping...

Amen to almost all of the replies to this thread. I have grumped about it to a poster in a PM and was reprimanded, so I left it alone.

What I do want to point out though, it's those kind of posts that are ref. to by banned, or previously banned members as 'kiddie' stuff. They were right, weren't they? As were the members who left on their free will for the same reason!  :)

Please.....Please..... do not do that.  The General Classical Music Discussion has just become ridiculous.  I used to go here for clever conversation and advice which has now been replaced by nonsense with all these top x lists.  Now my only sanctuary is the Opera and Vocal section.   Let me save the opera and vocal section from this by responding right now........Top 6 German language operas? Rest assure  they are all Wagnerian  ;D !!!

These list threads really preclude serious discussion.

Then ignore them and start interesting topics which we can discuss.

Hey, why don't you start an interesting topic  >:D .........

knight66

Why don't you go through my posts, plenty there, if you like vocal music, and you certainly seemed to on the old site.

I knew it.

It's too much work for you to start a new thread.

You'd rather gripe about it than do the work to start a new one.

For all the time you've spent complaining, and answering complaints, and referring to complaints, and referring to others' threads, you could have crafted a masterpiece of a thread.
