Need help with Chinese characters

XB-70 V, I think you may need more information.

From all of my one year study of Mandarin, Chinese characters differ according to intonation. And just to confuse us further, there may well be homophones too.

There are probably 200 words that could be Hing and/or Tsien. You'd have to know what the word actually is. Even with the same intonation, the word Lang, for instance, could be the word for wolf, corridor, young lad, junior officer, hammer, etc.

So, more information needed. In fact, there is no way to guess what the word actually is. You simply HAVE TO ask him/her, the family or a close Chinese friend of his/hers. There is no other way out of this at all.

Interesting. Thanks for the replies. I tried to learn some Mandarin when I went to Hong Kong and mainland China a few years ago but found (especially on the mainland) that local pronunciations differed drastically from what I was seeing in my books.

Considering the way he bangs the keyboard, I'm inclined to think that Lang Lang's name means "Hammer Hammer."

it's Cantonse, a dialet that i don't speak, but may different characters share the same pronounciation in the Chinese language, so I will give you the following, and you take your pick

Hing:
兴，庆，卿，轻，兄，氢，罄，馨，磬，šš胫，綮，謦，鑫，腈。

Tsien (this is probably wade-giles)

so, purely from deduction, the person with name "Hing" is probably from Hongkong/Guangdong, the person with "Hsien" is probably of Taiwanese descent.

well, it'd be best if XB-70 Valkyrie says whether it's his last name or not. Imagine him making a poster and the guy going "huh..... nice, but that's not how you write my name."

it'd be like writing my name "Gregg." (and i HATE that spelling!  )
