A new 3-parter on BBC4 on Fridays at 9pm. Last night concentrated on the immediate post-war period with RVW and the rise of Britten, and also the new-wave of Brit composers from Manchester in the 50's (Birtwistle, Maxwell-Davies, etc). It also looked at the difficulties Walton had with his opera and it's subsequent failure while he succeeded with ceremonial pieces for the Queens coronation. Cracking stuff!
Next Friday it concentrates on modernism and minimalism.
