Yeah I've been shopping for a new laptop and 2/3 of them seem to have no optical drive.  It hurts even more that the professional reviewers call it a legacy feature.  Legacy feature my ass!

So it's the optical drive that does everything, right? It plays the CDs, reads them to rip and burns them?

Hopefully Lacie will continue to make their well made external drives. I see them for around $100.

You know what's sad Sarge?  They're phasing out optical drives in laptops. :'(  I don't understand that how is that an un-essential feature that can be eliminated?  How would you watch dvds on a long flight or listen to cds (which still greatly outsell mp3s)?  It pisses me off! >:(

I understand that DVDs and CDs are going to become obsolete at some point....but if what you say is true, laptop manufacturers are jumping the gun.

Yeah, even if they stopped selling CDs and DVDs today, what about all the CDs and DVDs people already own?  :-\

DavidW

Yeah George the optical drive reads and writes cds and dvds.  Some can read blu-rays but that is a high end featured that hasn't surfaced on as many laptops as the dvd drive did back in the day.  Actually that hurts blu-ray adoption even more that just as they establish a foothold in the pc world manufacturers start phasing out optical drives altogether!  They just can't win! :D

GOULD, MORTON Concerto for Orchestra; Interplay; American Symphonettes 2 & 3; Chorale and Fugue in Jazz. Albany Symphony Orchestra / David Alan Miller, Findlay Cockrell. Albany

Great disc of fun and occasionally beautiful music.

The thing is that won't happen for decades.  In fact netflix predicts that they have not hit their peak profit on dvd rentals yet and won't for ten years.  I don't get the point, it's like they're trying to make laptops more like new fangled tablets when the tablets exist in their own niche.

There's always the possibilty of buying an external optical drive, for some models that have been the only option for years; but yes; a distinct annoyance in some situations. Particularly as the movie makers don't seem very keen on us ripping their DVDs....

Yeah all that ripping seems like way too much work for me. I still carry around a Discman.  8)

Yeah, I hear you.  I already ripped a few hundred CD's in WMA format at 192 to my desktop but backed them up on 2 1.5TB Seagate external HD's.  With my total collection soon to surpass 8000, I probably will never get to digitize all my classical music ...

Just make sure your playback equipments continue to work.

Sarge,

Not to worry.  I believe CD/DVD playback equipments will continue to be available.  Look no further than the new TT's that continue to hit the market so many years after LP pressing has practically stopped ...

Georg Böhm - Die Claviersuiten. Hamburg & Lüneburg ca. 1700
[Suites pour clavecin - Keyboard Suites - Suites para tecla]
Mitzi Meyerson [harpsichord, double manual instrument, with two 8-foot registers, a 4-foot and a lute stop, made by Keith Hill in 1998]
Recorded in Berlin (Siemesvilla), Germany, in March 2003
Glossa, 2 CDs

Excellent and sober performances of this intriguing music; Meyerson -who has a natural and fluent "voice"- uses all the necessary rethorical resources to convice us about the excellence of these compositions. Great recorded sound, beautiful instrument and interesting notes, including a long interview to the performer.

Probably the best known and the most "popular" composition by George Böhm It was rediscovered in 1837 as Böhm´s first work through Carl Ferdinand Becker's edition of Selected Musical Pieces for pianoforte from 17th and 18th centuries. Robert Schumann called it "an eerie caprice" and considered it was "the crown of the entire collection".

I'm listening to one of my most favoritist discs in my collection. It is a collection of music by Lehar with a disc title of "Fata Morgana". This is such fabulous music - I want to jump around and dance to it. In fact, I find it hard to sit still - music is so good. The collection spans a good portion of his career too. If you like Lehar, all I can say is: GET THIS DISC!!
Be kind to your fellow posters!!
