Just finished, for Scarpia's benefit:

The Quartet is a good demonstration of Bruckner's Schubertian side--some passages sound as if Schubert was the composer.  And it was a relatively early work.   I liked it better than most of his orchestral works.   Same can be said for the quintet, although that has a lot of what makes Bruckner sound like Bruckner.

Also includes the Rondo and Intermezzo, so the disc includes everything Bruckner wrote for string chamber ensemble.

Now on the player:

Schubert: String Quintet In C Major, D 956

Could you tell me about this one please, Conor, because I'm thinking of getting it especially for the sublime quintet, which I don't currently own on disc, only on a scatchy and jumpy LP...

Mahler: Symphony No. 9 In D Minor
Bruckner: Symphony No. 3 In D Minor, WAB 103, "Wagner"

Some EMI Budget-Box choices: 2 Symphonies in D Minor - Excellent performance of the Mahler though the SQ could have been better!. Have listened to the Bruckner Wagner Symphony a fair few times but still not that familiar with it :).

Great values for the money and I have both sets ...

This little package arrived this morning:

Starting off with the chamber and chamber orchestra disc; following up with the songs disc. It's a great reminder that sometimes with Stravinsky, less means more.

A great, great box set. I don't own this specific box set, but I bought all the Boulez Stravinsky recordings on DG individually. It's a fantastic series. I really love that performance of Symphony of Psalms.

Don - really like the Woodward; also have Jill Crossland on the Signum label - enjoyable set for me.

As a 'change of pace', I'd be curious if you have heard Tuma on the clavichord?   :D

Not a note.

Now playing this CD from my Chopin collection ...

BABBITT Music for the Mass  - for a cappella choir    excerpts with discussion with choir members by ChloĆ« Veltman on a broadcast from KALW - San Francisco
I expected that I would turn off the radio after a very short time, but the music reminded me of the late choral works of Richard Strauss.  Contrapuntal lines of augmented fourths and seconds keep resolving harmonically, vocal ranges are not extreme.   The International Orange Choir (I think that's the name) may record the work, published in October this year, 70 years after it was written, and I'd be quite happy to get a copy.

Great box - and the Symphony of Psalms which I owned separately is a masterful performance of one of last centurys major masterpieces. Surely one of Stravinsky's seminal works, but there are so many in the canon of this seriously great composer.

The performance and sound on that Schubert disc are both great Andre and the String Trio coupling is a brief pleasant work - I would definetely recommend it if you are considering purchasing :).

Havent listened to any RVW in ages!.
The performance of the Pastoral symphony on this Thompson disc is great and the Phantasy Quintet is just a beautiful work - highly enjoyable listening :D.

SCRIABIN:        Prometheus                                / Argerich, BPO, Abbado

The best version of this work, using fast tempi and very contrasted. Argerich is sensational in one of her most intense performances.

Svetlanov, with Izotov, is too slow: 23' against the 18' of Abbado. The last part is too monumental, as if he was conducting Bruckner.

The version of Maazel with Ashkenazy has a beautiful sound but seems cold and distant. However it has a very strong cohesion, almost as perfect as Abbado.
