I don't listen to much death metal but I like this:

Whoa, these guys are stuck permanently in "Master of Reality" Sabbath-era. But that actually is kinda cool...

Yep, that's where they're stuck: the heavy...  8)

I love this band so much - one of the only death metal acts who understand how to do long, epic and uplifting sounding songs. There is a certain amount of Slayer influence in the mid-tempo chugging, but the music is unmistakably of the band's own unique formula, stuffed full of interesting riffs, leads, solos and shifting dynamics, yet without sounding particularly eclectic or experimental. They are also able to do relatively slow tempos without having any death/doom influence. Much of the music is instrumental, but I often forget this fact given how well-integrated it feels. Even with a band like Iron Maiden, their instrumental tracks feel like you are missing something, but this isn't the case with The Chasm because instrumental passages have become such an integral part of their style. They also recognise that keyboards are a useful way to enhance atmosphere, but downplay their role (keyboard overuse is one of the most annoying things a metal band can do).

I felt that their last album (2004) was perfect, but this 2009 release somehow manages to be just as good, and potentially even better. It begs the question, with so many generic blastbeating death metal bands competing for a small fanbase, why don't more branch out like this? It's a common occurance in every other metal sub-genre.

(if you hate death metal vocals, give this a try - it's an instrumental as far as I can recall - forgive me if I'm wrong, the album is such a trip that I can't remember too many details :D)
Peanut butter, flour and sugar do not make cookies. They make FIRE.

I don't mind gruff vocals but most death metal vocals just make me laugh out loud. You have this cool music chugging along and then they let some guy make funny noises over the top. But I've always been particular about any vocalist...

This is actually very interesting, they take chances with the time. It's also quite listenable. I put this up there with Metallica's Call of Cthulu in terms of quality.

Disc 6

Third Set

This has very nice live Milestones on this set that is featured on the "highlight" disc that is easily obtained.  However, the complete set of seven discs still goes for over 200 bones, so I am very fortunate to have it.

Los Cuatro Fab, Revuelver in the stunning new monaural mix.

Just back from the dentist's, so I need a good jolt.
