Surprisingly I find myself having a Tchaikovsky Christmas. I rarely find myself listening to him, but now everything is demanding a listen.
Even The Nutcracker?

Whatever power is controlling your luck, is also seriously ripping Antoine off. ;D First the Byrd, and now this.

I surrender ;)

I believe this is a selection of excerpts, longer than the actual suite? Either way it's less than a disc, so cool beans.

Edit: The dance tunes must become so annoying during repeated listenings. I haven't heard this piece in ages and I still found the Chinese dance hard to stomach...

That could be an argument to hear the complete ballet oftener ; )

I don't mind the Chinese Dance . . . .

The last disc before holiday madness begins.  A rather nice disc with four rather nice works, all performed with heavyweights.  Truth to tell, the conductors and works should be swapped - with Szell conducting the Saint-Saens and Faure, and Bernstein conducting the Liszt and Weber.  But even as is, it's quite fine.  It's been years since I listened to this disc, and I must say that the Liszt is quite fine.  The Weber benefits mightily from Casadesus' style and Szell's precise conducting.  (How I would love to hear either Zacharias or Endres in this music.)  The Saint-Saens orchestral playing is perhaps a bit too heavy, but the Faure is spot on.  Good stuff.

EXCEPT of course for hardcore Tchaikovsky fans!  ;D

Actually, Sarge & I were having a beer together while listening to this:

and discussing whether a trip to Minnesota was in order... :D

I'm no hard core Tchaikovsky fan, but I do like his music, including The Nutcracker--the whole thing!  In fact, I think I'll go it right now!

Philharmoinca Hungarica

Decca [33 CDs]

Probably more in the "good to have" and "perfectly lovely" category than much more... but that's already quite something for such an undertaking. I'm beginning to regret not having gotten the Naxos Box when it came out, though...
