[thinkingoutloud] I wonder whether Sarge classifies his collection as: Auburn, Blonde, Brunette, Redhead, ... [/thinkingoutloud]

;D ;)

I think he likes them all. :) Nothing wrong with that. I prefer brunettes myself.

Good recordings! Wish he had recorded the unfinished 3rd as well.

Yes, and I wish his recording of Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade, which featured Borodin's In the Steppes of Central Asia was in better audio.  :(

Scarpia

Am trying to get this one.  Signs indicate it may be out of print, but Amazon still lists it at a price which, though not a fantastic bargain, is reasonable.

It contains lots of Martinon recordings from the mono and early stereo era on Decca, including many with interesting orchestras like the Paris Conservatory Orchestra and Wiener Philharmoniker.

Very clean and nice heavy pressings of these lps.  Total cost was $8.

I see, an old "LL".  They can sound quite good, but most of the ones I've come by are horribly worn, even if not abused or scratched.  In those days people did not have collections of 3000 recordings, so what people had got played often, I suspect.

That is a fine recording. Yoel Levi is severely missed by serious concert goers here in Atlanta because of his authority on the podium. He was probably, and I may be overstepping my bounds here, the finest conductor the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra ever had. Way better than Spano whose conducting is as boring as unbuttered toast.

It looks brand new, but that can be deceiving as you pointed out.  Maybe I can give it a spin later tonight.  This is not the album, but this is the label type, circa 1951:

Sarge
the phone rings and somebody says,
"hey, they made a movie about
Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."

First batch from Abeille, although its so busy there, that I cannot get in now. The discounts are not that generous this year.

Neither will I. The Central Europen prices are quite a bit higher than in the UK webshops, so a 20-30% really doesn't cut it. It seems I will have trouble picking out enough interesting items (16) to qualify for free P&P.

There are some good bargains to be had, even for you my dear Antoine.

Yes one has to comb through Abeille with a toothbrush this year, and I think I will make the 16, ( last year 120) with some effort.  Furthermore, its darn difficult to get on anyway, their server always backfires when such a rush is coming at them. Stupid really, because people will turn away and come back later, to find that all the yummy stuff has gone. But its a meagre year, no doubt about that.

It's possible, Harry, but I won't purchase any item there this year because I feel they are changing the rules of the game. Some days ago I made a hypothetical order for 350 euros or something so and now that order is for 335 euros which is nothing considering the high prices of these guys and their limited stock (I mean they don't distribute a lot of interesting labels). Good luck to you, dear Harry, but I'm out.  :)

But it's not a general sale, so you cannot expect more than a few items reduced from such a big basket.

But yes; a 30% reduction only means that they are competitive with regular offerings that occur all the time on mdt.co.uk, europadisc.co.uk, prestoclassical.co.uk....

So I'm out too, and thats' frankly a relief. I didn't need another avalanche of discs right now.
