Well, I quit smoking cigarettes in August 2001, and have not touched a cigarette to this day, although I've had the occasional cigar or cigarillo (like maybe 5 in total between Aug/01 to Mar/11).  Used Nicorette gum (2 or 3 pieces a day for about a month), and it worked wonders.

Well, since my separation, I've started smoking small cigars or flavored cigarillos.  I have about 4 a day.  I enjoy it, and I just wanted to.  I've reconnected with my sister (a lifetime smoker), since moving in with their family.  I enjoy having a cigarillo with her and a cup of coffee and talking about our father, our lives, anything under the sun.

These are the cigarillos I've taken to:  Captain Black's Gold and Bullseye Vanilla

I used to smoke Colts cigarillos but I find them too harsh now.  The above are much milder.

I quit over a year ago last year, I'm still addicted to nicotine via nicotine replacement products (lozenges) but I'm working on weaning myself off them now (that's another story outside the scope of this thread).

Back when I used to smoke, I was regularly smoking "Choice" blue cigarettes, made by the lovable Philip Morris right here in Australia (so at least I was supporting the local economy :o ). They're not the finest quality cigs, on the cheap and nasty side, but it's what I could afford (which was part of the reason I gave smoking the flick).

Like Chambernut above, my family are all smokers, but when I visit them on the weekends I don't join them for a cig. It's been a bit of a test, but putting oneself in this kind of situation - rather than withdrawing - can kind of build up an ex-smoker's resilience. But it is true that I have less and less contact now with (former) friends who were smokers, they are no longer part of my life for the obvious reasons, but I have gained some new friends who aren't smokers - so they've kind of filled the void left by the smokers...

Hmmm, for that brief adrenaline buzz you're willing to take a compound which increases LDL levels, causes hypoglycemia, causes vasoconstriction, increases blood pressure, facilitates the propagation of malignant cancer cells, and causes emphysema and cronic obstructive pulmonary disease?

Maybe I should change my login name to "buzz-kill"

Thank you.  Wow, I did not realize that smoking was bad for one's health.  You may have just saved my life.

This is the last post from you, Scarpia that I will be viewing, at least for the time being.  You will be the only one on my "Ignore List".  I was just waiting for your latest barb at me.  I have found that time and again, you go out of your way to post negative remarks on many of my postings (and in this case you actually are totally justified in doing so).  :D

You could also change your login name to "Sly", "ChamberNutTroll", or "Condescending".  Those would also be appropriate.

Everytime I make a post, I'm on pins and needles awaiting for your next barb towards me.  You may be well respected by many, if not all the posters on GMG, but I have had my fill of Scarpia, or "Barb-ia", if you will.  And, I'm not going to leave GMG on account of only one poster.

Have a nice day!  8)

That's news to me.

And you shouldn't that would be insane. :) I've learned to ignore many of the posters here like James, Philo---whatever his name is, and more recently Daverz who apparently has some sort problem with me. Life's too short to worry about these people.

My Dad smoked most of his life, but has given it up and has quit for 15 years. He's 59 now. My Mom, unfortunately, smokes and has smoked pretty much since my Dad quit, so how is this for irony? :D

I never bothered taking up smoking (or drinking alcohol for that matter). It never appealed to me. There's too many problems associated with each of them. I think I did smoke a cigar about 10 years ago, but that was just see what it taste like, which I remember being disgusting.

My Dad smoked, switched to a pipe, which is supposed to be less harmful, not soon enough because he died of lung cancer at an early age.  My smoking Aunt has obstructive pulminary disease, another smoking uncle uncle has recently been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, and yet another uncle had a heart attack, decided to ignore the doctors orders after his bypass and kept smoking, had another heart attack and a stroke and now they tell him he only has 15% of normal cardiac artery circulation and nothing left to bypass there.

There was an interesting incident in the states.  Various anti-smoking groups claimed that medical care required by smokers was increasing the cost of national health care programs.  Well, the cigarette companies commissioned a study which proved that smoking would actually reduce the cost of health care, because people would die before they had a chance to use up much health care.  Well, when they announced that study, it did not make a good impression.

So go ahead, sorry I made you feel bad about smoking.

Same story here - my father quit a long time ago (although I'm no longer in contact with him, but that's another story), but my mother has continued to smoke (although she's not a heavy smoker - but even a small amount of cigs can do you much harm). A doctor told my father that he basically had to quit, no option, as it was effecting his blood pressure problem (he'd smoke a cigarette and almost keel over due to dizziness). It's also a fact that more young women in Australia are taking up smoking than young men. Maybe it's the pressures that women are under now that more equality has been reached between the sexes in the Western world?...

Smart man.

Maybe you smoked that single cigar to pay tribute to your profile picture, Villa-Lobos, who is enjoying a cigar in that picture as we speak  :o ...

I'm sorry to hear about you and your father. Sometimes relationships with parents can be tough and become strained, but both of my parents, who have been married for 40 years this year, have always shown me a lot of support and have been there for me no matter what the cost. I realize not everybody is this fortunate, but I've been incredibly lucky in this regard.

:) I don't know about smart, but I've read too much about the effects of both cigarettes and alcohol. Not only that, but I have an addictive personality, so I can only imagine what it would do to me. I mean just look at my CD collection. :P

That's right! It was my homage to the great Villa of the Lobos! ;D

I used to smoke these:

Only the box used to be gold where it's red now.

What do/did you smoke?

I do not smoke but bought shares in Altria at the height of tobacco litigation.  My investment is now smoking ...   ;)
