Also, votes against The Rach are not mere "perception" at all!   0:)

Although I have not voted against the Rach PCs they are not ones that interest me much - but I recognize that they should be included in any list of the 100 faovred PC by GMG-ers.   I guess there was a period a while back when they did interest me, but I don't find myself listening to them anymore.  The works that DO excite me (Poulenc & Gershwin), seem to have some naysayers voting consistently against them - and that is much more irksome than the perceived nasty treatment to Rach-y.

:)
It's not personal, but I really dislike Poulenc. He doesn't excite me. I even listened to this one again before I voted to make sure. What exactly do you see in it? I hope this doesn't come across in a critical way - you are clearly hearing something I do not. I would stop voting against it once it got down to around 8 votes to allow some others to go first. Maybe then I would see there would be something far worse! :) Gershwin is one that I go back and forth - sometimes I love it and sometimes I don't. I haven't voted against it.

I feel this way about the Mozart piano concerti. They just bore me to death, all sounding so much alike. But I know they're considered masterworks so I live with them (when I have to). To each his own I guess

I am listening again to it, as I type and I cannot fathom why you would "really dislike" this piece.  I find it utterly charming and very well written.  The writing is witty and shimmering, it calls to mind champagne - sparkling but still understated.  The slow movement is especially beautiful, IMO - I love his piano writing in this work, but also, his treatment of the winds, especially the double reeds I think is very effective. There is also a dramatic, programmatic element, which I assume has to do with why it is subtitled choreographic.

I don't know, I love this piece, and have loved it for decades - but then again, I love Poulenc, actually the French school of the early 20th century in general.  It may not be your cup of tea (although if you like Offenbach I see no reason why this work is such a turn off for you) - but, you have singled it out for so many negative votes, it is almost pathological.   :)

Vote as you wish - but I will continue to +3 it everytime you -2 it and eventually adding 1 each round, and it may pick up some other + votes, and end up making it to the list.

This work is my project!

;) :D :-*
Hmmm. Fair enough. I'll give another listen when I can - until then, I'll hold off voting for or against.

I really don't understand how someone can't believe that somebody else dislikes something that they like. ??? There's a lot of music I dislike for personal reasons, but I can actually understand somebody not liking Poulenc. If one doesn't like the way he moves from humorous to seriousness then that's certainly fine with me. I don't hold it against them. As long as I enjoy his music, then ultimately, that's all that matters to me. In honesty, there's a good bit of Poulenc I dislike as well, but when he's inspired, his music is something quite special.

I've had another listen to this (trying to be open to it, leaving all the negativity at the door). And it is not as bad as I remembered it (maybe I was in a  bad mood that day). I liked much of the piano early on. The Rondeau was nice. What I did not like was the overly declamatory style of the piece at times. And I disliked some of the Stravinskian (is that a word?) aspects of it (of which the declamatory style is part). I disliked the second recitatif. But I liked the start of the Andante that followed it. Anyway, it is certainly not what I had in my head when I was thinking of the piece. I don't think I appreciate (value?) the shift from humorous to seriousness and back - I hadn't really felt this aspect until Mirror Image mentioned it (this jumping back and forth). I hated the Allegro feroce, but it is thankfully short. The interaction of the piano with the orchestra was more interesting that I remembered as well, overall.

The problem now is does it deserve all the negative votes, and here I am inclined to think not. But I cannot see myself voting for it either, mostly because there are better choices in my opinion. But still, a useful discussion as the more important issue is the music (not rankings).

. . . And it is not as bad as I remembered it (maybe I was in a  bad mood that day).

An utter tangent, of course . . . but this happens all the time, we are, in some way or measure, in a bad mood at the time of exposure to a new piece, and we "don't like" the piece, but at the time we are entirely non-cognizant of being at all otherwise than "completely objective" about the piece which was new to us.

Good on you, Neal, for giving the music a fresh go.

But I'd like to challenge you just a tiny bit vis a vis the "Stravinskian (is that a word?) aspects" of the work.

It is arguable that the influence was a two way street with Stravinsky adopting Frenchisms as well as being a huge proponent of the neoclassical style of the first part of the 20th century.   Both Poulenc and Stravinsky were breathing the same air..

:)
On this I agree. I wasn't trying to suggest that they did not have a mutual impact or something (or that who was doing the influencing was one sided). Simply, Stravinsky is more closely associated with what I was trying to convey, and that is why I used him the way I did.
