Cool shirt Sarge!

My favorite sweat shirt. It's a conversation piece. It's amazing how many people have come up to me over the years and told they were in the Division too. It even opened up my father. He didn't like to talk about his war experiences. He didn't want me to be a soldier. When I enlisted the first time, he actually took to his bed for three days...he didn't come out of the bedroom for three days! When I enlisted a second time, he was even more upset. He never asked me about my job; we never talked about the army. In the late 80s I was transferred to Fort Hood, assigned to the 1st Cav. The first time I came home after the transfer, I was wearing the shirt when he picked me up at the airport. He did a double take. He said he knew that insignia. During WWII he'd served in the Pacific on an attack transport, the Deuel, APA160.

That was a ship that carried soldiers, marines and landing craft to the islands for invasion. His ship landed troops at Iwo Jima and Okinawa, and then served as a hospital ship once the battles began. He saw such horrible things he didn't want me to experience that. Hence his opposition to my career choice.

Anyway, the shirt: He told me his ship carried the 7th Cavalry Regiment, one of the units of the First Cavalry Division, to Japan to serve as part of the occupation force. I'd never known that. He said they were moored really close to the Missouri during the surrender ceremony. 12 years later I found a website devoted to his ship and there was even a picture of the Deuel in Toyko Bay. He was thrilled...so was I!

It was great having that kind of connection to the old man. He told me stories I'd never heard before. I owe the Horse Blanket big time.

Sarge
the phone rings and somebody says,
"hey, they made a movie about
Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."

The story sent chills through me Sarge...will share with my wife later.  Thanks for sharing it.
There will never be another era like the Golden Age of Hollywood.  We didn't know how to blow up buildings then so we had no choice but to tell great stories with great characters.-Ben Mankiewicz

I would offer a photo of myself, but then everyone would just think of me as a show-off.  Yes, I look THAT good.
don't be shy, Don

Wow! You're much older than I thought!

Interesting.  Now that I have not been looking over this thread as much, and those of you that have other faces for your avatar, you are now beginning to look like your avatars again in my mind...and to some point, even those of you without a face for an avatar.

Nice to have the "old" Harry, Sarge, Ms. Hahn, Que, etc. back!  :D

But at the same time it was good, to see the faces that really belong to the posters right.
Back to Tchaikovsky again, did you noticed, my hair went more grey in these last couple of weeks. ;D

I'm fat 'n' fifty (nearly). You really don't need a photo to visualise how hideous that is.

And just what were you doing there?

What else is there to do? I was searching for happiness.

Wha-a-a-a-t?  :o

Let's not be hasty. And while we're at it, what about Touch of Evil-era Orson Welles?

Did you think I am 8 years old?  ;D I am 36.
Spatial distortion is a serious problem deteriorating headphone listening.
Crossfeeders reduce spatial distortion and make the sound more natural
and less tiresome in headphone listening.

Sarge - thanks for the great story - I'm a history buff (more into the Civil & Revolutionary Wars, living in North Carolina), but my FIL was in the Navy during WWII - he was a naval physician stationed on ships & on land; he always told stories of the casulties he had to treat - would often bring 'tears' to his eyes (seeing all of those young men or boys mutilated or dead); this memory intensified as he got older & his health was failing (kind of just had 'long term' memory which became quite vivid for him); he passed away about 18 months ago - I miss him a lot - for my adult years & our shared profession, he was my 'closer' father for the last 30+ years.

Of the many stories told, he did have a great one about Eleanor Roosevelt - he was head of a large naval hospital in the Pacific (can't remember now if on a ship or an island - now I should have taped these stories!) - but Eleanor was visiting, and he was chosen as her guide to show off the hospital - about a half hour tour - she was quite a lady according to him, and an experience he was always proud to have been a part.

At his funeral (Christmas year before the last one), there was an 'open' casket - he was buried in his naval uniform (had made Commander) and had several military representatives there - the flag was presented to my MIL - those experiences lived on in him to the remainder of his life (89 years).  Dave  :'(

Orson Welles was an attractive young man.

Orson Welles was an attractive young man.

I know, though - of the characters in Kane - I think Joseph Cotten got the looks in that bunch.

Hey, no worries. I'm kinda nosey, so I've been fascinated to see what everyone looks like. I had planned to start a 'What do you sound like? thread, where we record ourselves saying something daft and post up the files for others to hear. Only, my £70 digital voice recorder has gone into hiding. >:(
