I have a midi here:

Do a search on "anvil" and you will find my post.  There's a description and a midi file that simply does not do this song justice,  Besides "Una Furtiva Lagrima," this piece can be described as Kreisler's "Liebesleid," slowed down and melancholied up.

Thanks to everyone in advance!

is it the "Kazuo" file? is it supposed to be played by a piano or is it orchestral or some other arrangement? more clues please.

I can't figure out which post you are refering to - provide a direct link or upload the clip here.

Sorry, being new to this board, I didn't realize that I could upload a file.  Lessee if I can get it to work properly.  It's my first attempt at a midi, so please be kind.  The melody and timing are pretty close, but the lack of nuance is horrible.  Try to imagine this song in the style of Una Furtiva Lagrims (the first lines are almost identical anyway) and you'll be close.  Or, if you prefer, Kreisler's Liebesleid slowed down and "melancholied up."  Yeah, I've done quite a bit of research already trying to find out what this piece is.

Warning:  sometimes there is a loud burst of static at the beginning.  I don't know what causes this and it does not always happen.  I put my headphones on my cheeks until the melody starts.  Please be careful.

I used to listen to a soprano trying to get into the opera biz by participating in locally produced shows.  The window of her practice room was next to the window where I used to study (I was a student at the time) and listening to her beautiful voice was the highlight of my day.  She sang this song and accompanied herself on the piano.  To tell you the truth, I don't know if this is from an opera, if it's a lieder, or her own composition or adaptation.  I can't even guarantee that it was supposed to be sung by a soprano.  I think the lyrics were in Italian.  Sorry I can't be more helpful than that.    :(

I named the midi after her.  Yes, I googled her full name to see if she made it in Japan (well, her name IS Kazuko, after all).  I'm even having a Japanese friend try to track her down using Japanese google for websites that I can't access and couldn't read if I could.

Thanks to all for your efforts!

I don't know the piece but it sounds like a folksong.
Good luck tracking her down. Kazuko is a common enough name with different Kanji spellings.

Maybe it was her talent and artistry, but it sounded like an aria sung by a soprano whose heart was breaking, opera style.

And, sorry to say, I had no luck finding her.  It's a pity because her voice was really beautiful.
