I love the cover on this CD too!  I think right now Symphony No.2 is my favorite one of Brahms.  That isn't saying too much though, as his symphonies (in spite of Brahms being my co-favorite composer) are my least favorite of his entire output.  Don't get me wrong, I still do enjoy them, just not nearly as much as his other output.

I like all of Brahms's symphonies. The 2nd is outstanding, Ray, but the 4th is my favorite. I do like so much of Brahms's music though, especially the the concertos, overtures, and his choral works like the Ein Deutsches Requiem are favorites as well. The more digging you do into his output, the more treasures you'll find. Hungarian Dances and Alto Rhapsody are two other favorites.

Thoughts?

I don't really know Adams well at all, apparently this disc is a bit of a mish-mash of early and recent works but I like it. Road Movies (a violin sonata) in particular - the violin writing reminds me a bit of Górecki's 2nd quartet in its rough, sawing action - quite earthy and dance-like. The piano pieces are neat, ranging from straight minimalism to busy slightly pop-influenced stuff. While nothing gets me really obsessed about the music, for the enjoyable programme the disc finds itself in regular rotation for me.

Finished up the first disc, devoted to Mozart, and my extremely high expectations were surpassed.  I know the Schumann in this set, but everything else will be new to me.  Almost certain to be one of my purchases of the year.

Darn! I just declined to pull the trigger on that - clearly a mistake.
