I have the series as individual issues.  It's definitely worth getting, although the AmazonUS price is a little steep :)

How would you characterize the quartet's style? I have the Vermeer - warmly romantic with a burnished sound - and the Endellions - very rough'n'ready classicizers - would enjoy having a third set.

Hmmm..not sure what I would call their style.  Rough'n'ready romantic possibly--I'm not sure at all, because when I listen to these works,  I'm not really listening for an overall style.  The music of these quartets involves me no matter who is playing it, and I don't pay attention to things like that

Let's see.  I have complete sets of Quartetto Italiano, Alban Berg Quartet (the later cycle, I think), and Guarnieri, plus various installments by the Emersons, Yale SQ, Tokyo SQ and Takacs SQ--but not the two you have, unfortunately.  I suppose of these all Artemis is closest to Takacs.

One thing about the individual CDs--as issued, they did not follow a chronological order, but mixed late and early and middle all together.  No idea if the box set follows this or falls back on bog standard chronological order.

Interesting. Then why have so many versions, if I may ask? :)

MDT give a listing of every track on the Artemis set, here:

http://www.mdt.co.uk/MDTSite/product/NR_October11_Classical/0708582.htm

And Presto Classical give some blurb about it here:

(If you search on their site for the individual recordings, you get more.)

At £16 I can't resist this, and my 'Buy No More CDs And Listen More To The Ones You Have' resolution hits the dust. Thanks, erato, for the tip-off.

Navneeth, you're forgetting where you are.  I only have four complete cycles.  In GMG terms, that's a small amount  >:D

Same here and I did not even like string quartets a few years ago and did not get my very first Beethoven String Quartets until two years ago ...

I just get a kick out of asking such apparently naive questions. :P

Amen. This is the bargain thread, after all.

Afraid you are right. I own 28 cycles :o, and of course I have preordered the Artemis cycle 8).

Placed my order for the Artemis. Once I draw my first new paycheck I'll follow suit with the Celibidache box sets and, if it's still that cheap, the Delius violin sonatas.

Which do you listen to most often?

Since my purchase of these sets took place within the last two years, I have not yet got through the pile (there is too much else I want to listen to). This means that I listen to a new recording every time. My faves until now are Vegh II and the Alexander Qt. (the Arte Nova release). I also very much like the clear unaffected style of the Alban Berg Qt. and the Suske Qt.

The Beethoven SQs have proven surprisingly resilient to 'mass-purchasing, mass-consumption' for me as well. I had the Takács when I bought the Budapest, and then the Vegh II, Lindsays I and Talich cycles. Now I just listen to Vegh II over and over. ::)

But I don't regret 'hoarding' the others, in so far as this may give me something to transfer to, when I eventually want something new (at which point I'll obviously buy the Busch set :P). 'Eventually' takes a lot longer for this repertory than I thought, though!

(Just to be clear, comedic effect notwithstanding: I have put on discs from the various sets. I just always return to Vegh II.)

And here I sit, bemoaning my contentment with just one cycle.
