1st listen: very pleasant CD of atmospheric lush programmatic late-Romantic symphonic music:

[asin]B000002SR4[/asin]

Well played, and IMO more successful than the Lady Godiva Overture CD.

Yes, I like this selection of music much more than Pesek's Chandos disc. In The Tatra Mountains is especially ear-catching.

Steadily progressing through this set, this morning CD7: Il Secondo Libro di Toccate [ect.]

Sergio Vartolo plays his harpsichord built by Barthélémy Formentelli after a 17th century model, kept in the Ca' Rezzonico, Venice, and alternating two organs of the bassilica di San Petronio in Bologna: the organ 'in cornu Epistolae' (1471-75) by Lorenzo di Giacomo da Prato, and the organ 'in cornu Evangelii' (1586) by Baldassarre Malamini.

The organs are located left and right of the main altar:

Sofar, all in all a pretty good set! :)

Funny you should be listening to that one. I'm close to finishing this disc, which I have enjoyed from day one, so I have not sought out alternatives...

The Ghielmi brothers play a German period viola da gamba and fortepiano copied after Gottfried Silberman.

Probing and expressive playing, as is customary from these performers. This recording completely outclasses Pandolfo & Alessandrini (Tactus/ Brilliant Classics) - strongly recommended, provided you do not insist on much polish.

The Jansen performance is interesting, especially the opening. It seems slower than usual (although the overall first movement timing is virtually identical to Perlman), very gentle even hesitant. I'm tempted to call it feminine. Very appealing to me. I think the balance between violin and orchestra is superior: a more natural concert hall perspective. Not that you need to rush out for another version. The Perlman is a great one.

I thought I would check this out, I listened to it a couple of times since last night.

Very interesting music, particularly effective orchestration... but it bothers me a little that his compositional style is so inconsistent from piece to piece. The Lady Godiva Overture has some nice moments, but I can't shake the similarities to Liszt's Faust Symphony... some of the tunes seem to be lifted straight out.

Same thing for me with Toman and the Wood Nymph... many passages seem to come straight from Glière's Ilya Muromets symphony... particularly the orchestration.

However, the De Profundis is rather interesting with some more unusual orchestrations, and an interesting history of it's conception during the German occupation.

I'm intrigued enough in this composer to want to check out some more recordings...

Thank you for your feedback, Bobster. I can see what you mean with the reference to Liszt, but I really have to say that I absolutely love Lady Godiva. To me, it is such a beautiful piece. I have not heard Toman and the Wood Nymph yet so will listen to that later this week and get back to you. I have actually only just ordered this cd, I was listening to it on youtube before ;) Same with De Profundis, shall get back to you!

Glad you enjoyed the other Pesek Novak disc, apart from that one and this Chandos recording, there are unfortunately very limited numbers of Novak cds available. A shame...

Disc XV, the last one from this box, and what a fabulous journey it was. Perfect singing, stunning recordings, fine composers in the line up. The box which I bought this year has impressed me mightily, which I did not expect. And the last disc is no exception, its a gorgeous close off, and I wish there were 15 discs more of this ensemble. Maybe Sony/DHM may be releasing another box with all the rest of the recordings they made.
