^^ I've been listening to CM for precisely 3 1/2 years... as a consequence, there is still so much very basic repertoire which is new to me...

... but trust me, I'm doing my best!  8)

LAST SHOPPING DAY OF THE YEAR!!!! AHHHHHHHHH

I HAVE OXYGEN IF I NEED IT! >:D

Does no one else feel like buying a bunch of cds is like masturbating? nevermind ::) I just feel kind of shameful with this list I'm endlessly looking over,... I really need to snap out of this,... but I'M IN A DISCOVERY PHASE, leave me alone,...

I really AM at a great place to take a sabbatical here,... boy I could use a girlfriend now, haha!,... ah, what are those sirens outside??, hmm,...

Thanks for the well-wishes MI  :D  - it's going to be pretty tough holding out on buying stuff as there are always so many cool box-sets coming out! *gulps*  ;D
I'll make one suggestion (that works for me anyway)- create an emergency fund of like $100 (doesn't need to be big) that you can use to buy discs. Perhaps split it into $25 per quarter, to make sure you don't use it up too fast.  This way you won't have to go cold turkey, but at the same time, you'll keep the buying down significantly. It will make you prioritize and as you wait, you will realize some purchases have less priority than others. Just a thought - I find it hard to go cold turkey after a month or two.
Be kind to your fellow posters!!

^^^^Sounds like a good idea neal! - I've told myself that todays (non-classical) purchases will be my last for a while but its probably wise to make provision for buying stuff if something really irresistable is released! :)

*checking in*

For 2012, I am planning to put on hold purchases of duplicate recordings of works and focus solely on maiden composers...

The only problem is that my initial maiden composers list has 81 names already (from Aho to Zemlinsky)...

;D
Olivier

The new erato

I have progressed the other way - from many years of focusing mainly on unknown works by composers I know and on new composers, the last year have been the year of duplicate buying due to the large amount of cheap, reissued sets, and a fear that this will be the last time many of these will be seen on CD. I would like to cut back and focus on new stuff again, but I fear that the situation of 2011 will continue for a couple of years......

haha, yes, I've 'tried' that too,... thankfully, I've come to the end of my current knowledge. Now it's just a matter of keeping myself ignorant!

This sounds like a good idea. An "emergency fund," I like it. :) I don't know if I have the discipline to do this, but I can sure as hell try! 8)

No purchases, no desire. I really got The Good Stuff in my doting, so I'm quite satisfied and can probably trick myself into not getting stuff for a little while. Ebay, of course, doesn't count, as things come up when they do, and we have no control (now that we have that straightened!). Still, rules are rules. ::)

Brian

Compulsive CDCDCD readers can correct me, but since March 2011, these are the only CD purchases I've made using my own money (gift cards don't count):
- Ansermet Original Masters box (at an Istanbul Philharmonic concert in April)
- Rach: Symphonic Dances (at the RLPO for Vasily Petrenko to autograph in June)
- six Praga chamber music CDs from an MDT sale this fall

I'd say the habit is in retreat right now.  :)
But that's only because I'm really, really, really poor... once I have salaried work, the struggle will begin again.

Jan 2, 2012. I held out for one day  :D  ...but caved in today with an order for my 11th and 12th  Alpensinfonie along with a completely useless and redundant order for more RVW Symphonies (Andrew Davis 1, 2, 8 and 9).

"hey, they made a movie about
Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."

Have you tried selling blood? Semen? The occasional mugging will also help finance your addiction  8)

Each year, you get one chance to add a zero to the end of that number, and one chance to change the currency (like from dollar to pound. Don't change it to yen. I don't care how much the dollar depreciates...).
Do what I must do, and let what must happen happen.

Not to self: don't change currency to Yin.

Okay. Check. :D

Technically now... if we don't count the Dusapin purchase (2 issues) in early January (which, TECHNICALLY >:D, we WILL count as last year's purchase because it was the last piece in the 'puzzle'  was working on (and yes, I feel the puzzle is completed as is)), I have had absolutely no real desire to get ANYTHING.

My point is,... I'm wondering if I really have CDCDCD or not. I mean, it seems all the fever I was experiencing was just there to help me 'finish' this 'puzzle', and now that I'm 'satisfied' that I've got all my ducks lined up (so to speak) I am actually ENJOYING The Collection! I'm feeling like 'it's all here': truly, anything on top of what we have now is pure GravyTrain.

The main problem now is that I've not replaced my 'focus'...shifting gears... and I fear stagnation and depression if I don't find something...wanker!! :o... to occupy my febrility. As of Valentine's Day, 'THAT' won't seem to be happening...AGAIN >:D (oh, I've got a great story about last night... well,... it sucked for ME >:D, but,...)

ok, enough ranting

Just thankful that I'm not obsessing about cds, but, wishing that there was a little human lovingkindness in my life. Waaah! :'(

I'm not obsessing either. Even though I just bought two Bruckner Thirds (two of the same performance, I mean) I'm not obsessing  :D
