Switched to a work in which I would love to join in and sing along:

I was sure I had a set of his symphonies and went looking today to put no. 5 on my "to listen" playlist in foobar but I discovered annoyingly that I'd only bothered to pick up the odd symphony here and there and missed out on 5 for some reason. :(

Since you're currently listening to Beethoven - Chailly ;) .... might I suggest to check out Mahler 5 - Chailly?
One of the most convincing introductions to this work, I think. (Also recommended for further listening in the future, btw.)

Sold. Onto the wishlist it goes. I want more Chailly stuff anyway, his Beethoven has impressed me (not that I'm experienced enough for this to count for much!!)
My favourite words in classical: "Molto vivace"

In general, I would consider Chailly as really solid. I admit though that he's not the first conductor I would pick to collect dozens and dozens of discs from. But there are good things to be found in his catalogue from Bach to modern music. His palette of interests is broad and rich.

With his Mahler 5, you will get a very good one IMO. Solid, as I mentioned, with natural alternation and balance between dramatic and lyric passages. Another plus is the impeccable playing of the Concertgebouw forces (Peter Masseurs, first trumpet & Jacob Slagter, first horn!!), combined with a very good recording sound quality.

Yeah, I'm not going to obsess over collecting all his stuff, just look for recommendations of his work around the place.

Thread duty:

Symphony No. 7. First time giving it a good (not passive/distracted) listen.

All because my wife likes it a lot.

Probably my favorite PC.  Is that the Brilliant set?  Looks like a different color than mine.

Yeah I think it's a second issuing by Brilliant. Not sure though. When I was ripping them I kept getting a Complete Beethoven cover attributed to Brilliant from around 2007 or something like that.

I wonder when you will listen to a whole Wagner's opera, and not only excerpts ;) This Karajan's recording is always worth listening though.

For me now:
Symphony No.5

;)
Well, I have decided to ask for the Karajan Ring Cycle to be my birthday present this year, so hopefully then. ;) I'm really excited about hearing it! I have been wanting to listen to more Wagner for absolutely ages! :)

About the Martinu, absolutely love that symphony! Don't you think it has one of the most thrilling endings ever!?

I'll second that. My favourite recording of Mahler 5.

Ah.  Thanks.  Well if you enjoy that piece and do not have it, be sure to look for a Serkin effort.

Yeah, I've two versions of it at the moment (Gilels). Getting a third is behind getting new music in priorities at the moment. Thanks for the recommendation though.

Haha, these are wonderful news! I'm very glad about it and I hope you'll enjoy the Ring Cycle (as if it weren't possible ;))! By the way, have you have a listen to Siegfried's finale I sent you yet? If I had to find out only one thing wrong with Karajan's Ring, it would be just about Siegfried's finale: the rythm is a bit too slow, and this makes the piece lack power and intensity. From that point of view, maybe the Barenboim and the Solti are better.

I definitely love the 5th as well, it's my favourite Martinu's symphony so far! Certainly agree the ending is extremely thrilling and overwhelming! I look forward to listening to No.6 now.

I did, yes! Thank you once again for sending it! I never thought I would ever hear you say that about Karajan! It did sound a little too slow perhaps, so I probably agree. The Karajan is your favourite cycle though isn't it? Or should I get the Solti?

Glad you like Martinu 5, Ilaria! Hope you enjoy the 6th as much, it is a great piece!
