A very nice album. The title is misleading, it's not "only" for children.  ;D

The Ugly Duckling is great, little-known Prokofiev.

This is fast becoming one of my favourite cycles. :)

This is simply a wonderful CD, Bowen at its finest. Deeply romantic, with a hint towards modern tunes. The performance leaves nothing to be desired, and Michael Ponder made a gorgeous recording.

Concerto for violin, Piano, and String Orchestra

Really enjoying this so far :)

(Side note:  I hate when people give CDs low ratings because they bought the wrong CD.)

If you're referring to Amazon, then yes it's annoying, but most of those reviewers are scolded by others for reviewing an MP transaction or a defective item rather than the item itself.

The very sad thing is, although he was one of the best Harpsichord players in the world, and a Dutchman, the attention given to him after he died, on radio and TV and paper, was minimal. Just a small space in my paper. Clearly Dutch people had more attention for the dead of a actor for the masses, who died on the same day. Gustav Leonhardt was nothing to the majority in my country, but happily he got all the attention he deserved in the rest of the world. RIP.

Yes, I guess we sometimes forget how minority is our love of this kind of music. Even among lovers of Early music there are a lot of misunderstandings about Leonhardt's figure and legacy. Yesterday, for instance, I did read some comments on a Spanish board of Early music and words frequently repeated were boring, somber and so...

It's a very good disc.  For me, the concerto is the best thing on the disc (Though, not to say the Dante Symphony #3 is bad, it's still very good)  For the most part (like 99%), the orchestra plays very well.  But there are times when they are slightly off, but nothing to really effect my enjoyment of this disc.

Sound is very clear, decently to well balanced (I don't know the score enough to fully determine that). The string section is a drowned out by brasses a bit,  but nothing horrible.

Still getting a handle on how I feel about the sound of this instrument:

This cycle with the Prokofiev symphonies is a favourite one. Jarvi puts in what I need to hear, commitment, warmth, a fresh approach, towards details and nuances. I feel immersed in the world he draws out of the notes, and become a integral part of the music. Kitajenko never gave me this. All his efforts ends in sameness, while with Jarvi every symphony stands out from the rest.
The sound is really good.

Symphony No. 4, opus 112, revised version 1947.

Achhhh, that's a good egg too, when I bought this, a very long time ago, it made quite a impression on me!

Quite good.  There are a few moments of less than perfect intonation, but then this is live.  I'd say the Columbia recording is better, but that's one of the very finest available.  Being an unabashed fan of the Budapest Quartet, I simply must have all of their LvB.

Online sampling this during breakfast. Seems on a higher octane-level than the Mortensen I have (Naxos), freer style, more embellished. Attractive...but do I need more recordings of Buxtehude's harpsichord works? And what about Ton Koopman's recordings (Challenge Classics)? ::)

hmmm...decisions...decisions... ::) :-\

Well, although I recently purchased the Complete Organ Works of Buxtehude and have a handful of other discs of his music, I do not own any of his harpsichord compositions - will add to my 'wish list' w/ Harry's strong recommendation!  :)
