Most - if not all - HIP ensemble versions, I know, tend IMO to overdo the aestetic elements of the work and sound too nice. I appreciate aestetic beauty, but I prefer an interpretation in which all the elements of the music are well balanced. This is true of most of the keyboard versions, I know (on organ, harpsichord and even piano). If you ask me, which HIP ensemble version I prefer, this is Jean-Claude Malgoire´s recording for K617:

Thanks, again. :)

Have you heard Tilson Thomas's Glagolitic Mass, Ilaria? Easily the best performance on record IMHO and I've heard almost all of them.

Of course, I've got that recording too; I agree it's very beautiful. :)

I finally cracked the seal of this one. The luxurious musical delights and the packaging to match, make me feel like a little child in a candyshop. Good heavens, what an opera!  :o :)

Just finished the aria "Resta, ingrata, io parto" (Stay, ungrateful [wretch], I'm leaving)
Now, that's not for the fainthearted! ;D

Q

Opus106

I'm gasping for air just listening to Lisa Besnosiuk play the partita for tr. flute solo, BWV 1013. Fast or slow movement, just to maintain the line of the music must be an arduous even the seasoned performer, I'd guess. First listen to this music.

BTW, thanks to Antoine that I saw this disc on sale at Abeille. I missed it on the first run-through of their list. :)

Listening this afternoon to Donizetti's Rosmonda d'Inghilterra on Opera Rara. Singers include Renee Fleming, Bruce Ford, Nelly Miricioiu, Alastair Miles, and Diana Montague. The orchestra is the London Philharmonia Orchstra conducted by David Parry. This is a first rate performance in every way - a total success. The singing is simply outstanding, as is the chorus. The orchestra is conducted with great tautness and the result is tremendously exciting throughout. The packaging is the usual Opera Rara quality (big booklet).  Pure pleasure...

Quote from: The new erato on February 26, 2012, 12:57:17 AMYou should try the cello sonata too. Those late Debussy sonatas are all around amazing.

I've heard many, many times, erato. In fact, I've heard all of Debussy's and Ravel's chamber works.

Quote from: madaboutmahler on February 26, 2012, 03:36:20 AMI can guess you'll say that they don't compare to the Boulez, but I'd still be interested to know your opinion. I think the performance of the Concerto for Orchestra is excellent. A great Dance Suite as well.

Nonsense, I love Solti's Bartok recordings. They're some of my favorites. I especially love his accompaniment to Ashkenazy and Chung in the concerti. Simply outstanding.

You're welcome, Navneeth! Contrarily to other people who love Bach music, I really like all of these flute works. Probably it's because I was lucky enough to find the superb Hantaï's version as my first approach to this music.

Soon I will be listening to Besnosiuk, too.  :)

I have the highlights version.  Your description of the performance is spot on.

Solti's CfO is very good, and the Dance Suite and the Violin Concerto are two of the best Bartok recordings in the modern era.

Now listening:

BTW, I am tempted to try these transcriptions:

I was listening to some tracks and they sound as a very friendly and unforced interpretation.

BTW2, it's a scientific fact: you need at least three lungs to play decently the flute partita. ;D

You can get it from arkivmusic.com for 13 bucks.
Yes I know, I wondered when I posted whether I should have mentioned that I don't like Arkivmusic reissue program for several reasons, one of them being the extensive shipping costs for single discs to Europe.
