Thanks for the feedback, John :) Belohlavek/Leichner set looks certainly amazing, I think the Czech Philharmonic is the best performer of Martinu's music. It might be one of my next purchases.

Enjoy Sibelius in the meantime!

Thanks, Ilaria. I agree it's hard to beat the Czechs in Martinu. My favorite Martinu PC is the 4th. Truly gorgeous through and through. You'll love it too I'm sure.

I've still loved it!! I fell in love with Martinu's music after seeing his Piano Concerto No.4, played by the Czech Philharmonic, on TV, it impressed me very much!

This is good, then we both agree that you need the Martinu PCs ASAP. :D

Mahler: Symphony No. 9 (Dudamel / LAPO, live broadcast on SymphonyCast, here) - This was taped just recently at Disney Hall, and a Mahler-expert friend who was in the audience wrote me later, calling it "transformative." Haven't finished the entire broadcast yet but I'm already inclined to agree. Dudamel has grown considerably in the three years since I heard him do the Mahler 5 here with the New York Philharmonic (on a memorable, moving concert at 11:00 in the morning!). Good as that was, he is becoming better at communicating Mahler's architecture, and the Los Angeles ensemble - fine as it sounded with Salonen - if anything, is playing with even more commitment.

My first encounter with this amazing work. Absolutely awesome. I really need to listen to this piece in full now...! :D

I have not been as excited with a new piece as I am now with this for a very long time!

:o :o What?!  :o :o

Run, don't walk to your nearest Alexander Nevsky!
Jarvi, Abbado, Dutoit all have great recordings...If you want the whole film score then go for Temirkanov.

Not yet, Ilaria. So far from that Abbado recording,I have only listened to Lieutenant Kije. I have so much on my listening pile that I am so excited about hearing! :D

haha :)

Well, I've been sitting here for the last hour listening to this part of the 'Battle on Ice' now! ;) I do have the Abbado recording, I suppose I might give this a listen tommorow.

Listening for what could be the 20th time this evening, this excerpt from the 'Battle on Ice'. IT'S SO AWESOME!!!!

I understand; listen also to Alexander Nevskij and the Scythian Suite, they're definitely overwhelming, powerfully expressive too!

It's from this if you are interested:

Each is a bit different. I don;t know if it is my favorite as there are several good versions. I love some of the relentless, breathless moments in Stokowski and he really knows how to build up to a big explosion of sound. Brian recommended the Ancerl, which I have, but have yet to rip and so have not yet gotten to it. I will have time only in April, so that will have to wait a bit.

Yes, yes, Daniel. Another one of the crowning achievements of Prokofiev's brilliant compositional career.
