I should have learned my lesson quite some time ago. There are composers you simply don't poke fun of without getting a tongue lashing from the "veteran" members and those are Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart. You must also remember, it's certainly okay for everybody else to poke fun of the composers that I admire.

No, I don't think it's okay at all.  Actually, I can't remember any members making fun of your favored composers such as Koechlin and Pierne.

As for getting a tongue lashing if you dump on the "Big 3", that's what happens when you take on the big boys; they have die-hard fans and many of them.

Not just veteran members, but classical music lovers in general. If you take on the most loved composers you have to expect a negative reaction. If you can't take the retaliatory heat, don't make provocative statements. But you realize, you're still an apprentice. You need to read up on the legendary trolls. For example, look up the late member Iago; read his comments about Mozart and his "I-don't-give-a-shit-who-likes-the-Austrian-pansy" attitude. Learn your craft, MI  ;D

We're still talking about this? Looks like my comment was more controversial than I thought. :D

Actually, I thought it was the idea that so much music was sold for so little that made John feel nauseous!

But, as the French don't quite say, chaconne a son gout.

Ooh, dirt cheap, too . . . fiercesome temptation.

It is one of the best Bach recordings I've ever heard.  Give into temptation!

Scriabin/Lettberg complete opus works.

I´ve got quite a lot of Scriabin, including the Ponti complete works on LP/German pressing (which is OK, though sometimes a bit too hasty) and many sonatas recordings, but am really looking forward to this CD set. Heard a few promising excerpts on the Amazon site. The delivery isn´t going to be tomorrow though, they say 20 - 45 days, but the price including postage was less than 30 Euros. Except from a few cheap and rare LPs found now and then, I expect this to be my last major Scriabin buy. Concerning the symphonies, I´ve got Svetlanov, Muti and Golovanov complete etc.

This disc turned up cheaply on my Amazon wishlist, and completes my Tippett/Hickox orchestral collection:

I bought this at Abeille's sale for something like 12 Euros. I'm waiting, eagerly if I may add, for the time to completely immerse myself in this music. The preludes captivated me when I first heard them a few years ago on the radio, but this is my first recordings of his music.

Oh what a great disc. Really it is something else. The Piano Concerto is played beautifully by Shelley and the accompaniment of Hickox is absolutely splendid. Handel Fantasia was also very well played and, to my surprise upon listening to it again the other day, the work sounded even better than I remember. :) Hope you enjoy this recording as much as I have, Edward. :)

Some recommendations from the listening thread yesterday (believe Harry & Karl) - thought that I had those works by Liszt, but owned just 2 or 3 of them on a compilation disc - :)

Just bought for $6:

Looking forward to hearing this one. It will be great to have another performance of the 4th (Solti's performance was awful, Hickox's performance was very good).

Also bought this, which is out-of-print in like new condition for $10:

I only have one more recording of Hickox to go and it's quite expensive (the recording with Triple Concerto and Concerto for Orchestra).
