The Tennstedt Schumann CDs are hard to find outside the big Tennstedt-box... I can't find the Red Line discs in the US at all. But in the UK the 4th can be had for just a pound, used. There's a bargain!

I ordered a copy of the 4th from Amazon DE. 55 Euro Cent  8)

Some Haydn symphonies performed by Fischer/Austro-Hungarian Haydn Orchestra. The 1-20 set fills in some gaps and almost gives me at least one recording of every symphony. And the other 2-fer I'm picking up for #45 Farewell, which will be my eighth recording, and for #48 Maria Theresia

Jens,

How do you rate the Stenz M2 as a whole please ? Just listened to the Amazon samples, seems a bit on the fast side maybe ? thank you.

Can't comment insightfully yet... since I've had only one or two cursory 'listens'. I know the M2 that jumped at me, right out of the box, was/is the latest release of the Dresden Staatskapelle Edition on PROFIL Haenssler with Haitink from '95.

Very interesting series from Glossa this, with various composers Prix de Rome submissions. I want them all  ;D (Debussy and Saint-Saens double sets have been released) but since I'm totaly unfamiliar with Gustave Charpentier (of Louise fame), I start here.

And Haydn is never wrong. Very cheap on various UK sites (this order is from eurodisc); though not from amazon.

PS I see now that I may have posted this earlier; it's now on its way in the mail.....

Willoughby earl of Itacarius

Two which seemed to me interesting, I already have the first two volumes of the Sammartini. Very well done, so I expect this one to be good too!

Two more ordered, thought they won't ship for a while:

[ASIN]B000HXE5BK[/ASIN]SHOSTAKOVICH : String Quartets 1-15 / Borodin Quartet (Melodiya)
Apart from this being the one that most people recommend, my comparison of movement timings indicates this is the preferrable set (people tend to take the slow movements much too fast).

[ASIN]B003UD7HLE[/ASIN]PROKOFIEV : Echoes of Dark Years (The Year 1941, Ballad of an Unknown Boy, Ode to the End of the War, etc.) / Titov (Beaux Authentics)
These works aren't top notch Prokofiev in my experience, but I was so impressed by Titov's performance of the October cantata that I thought I'd better grab this before it goes out of stock.

14 GBP from a UK-based amazon reseller, not bad. Have received a confirmation, but no set though.

  I just ordered this:

  My very first Haydn symphonies!

Reason: I found Haydn's string quartets so infectious I needed to explore further!

A great pick, it's remarkably well-played. Congrats on avoiding the Dorati set - it's good, but I feel requires a little nostalgia to be considered an ideal rec.

No love for me picking up some of the Fischer/Austro Hungarian? Geez. Who do I need to...never mind.

Just bought this for $18:

I own nothing by Arensky so I figured who better to guide me through the music than one of my favorite conductors: Svetlanov.

Marvin being a greenhorn Haydnisto needs all the encouragement he can get. You, on the other hand, are a long-time convert. Right? ;)
