The sound needs a remastering badly, very audible ringing at higher frequencies. People were worried about the durability of the CD when it came out newly, - but the quality of early digital recordings or transfers makes me want to replace so many old ones, when the "hardware" is still like new.

EDIT: Continuing with my favourite act: II. Tagore

Glazunov Symphony #4 E flat op.48, Rozhdestvensky conducting the USSR Ministry of Culture SO

Sarge

I am glad that I seem to have prompted you to listen to some Glazunov, Sarge!

This is exactly what I am listening to now, (as anticipated earlier), Rozhdestvensky conducting the USSR Ministry of Culture SO in a brilliant, beautiful performance of Glazunov 4, a favourite of mine. The main melody is one of my favourite melodies of time.

What do you think, Sarge?

I agree! When I went to Latin Club at school, I played the club the opening of M8, and recieved a negative response (people talking, sleeping, munching noisily etc...). I left the club not long after.

:D

Ah... such a refreshing listen! I love Glazunov 4 so much!  :-*

Yes, he's not ready to stop at anything. But at least when he lets it rip (when he shouldn't have, IMHO), one expects him (the recording) to falter somewhere with a wrong note, waiting for him to trip, so to speak, but it's vaguely satisfying just to hear him dispatch all notes seemingly effortlessly. 0:)

Wow, I've now heard Gould play the slowest Appassionata I ever and the fastest Op 111 I and I like both. Maybe I should invest in Gould playing the complete cycle. Does it exist anywhere?
Cheers

Loved it. Quite gorgeous. It's been many years since I've taken the Glazunov box off the shelf. It was like hearing both symphonies for the first time. I'll listen to the others this weekend.

This is really great to hear, Sarge! :) Hope you enjoy the other symphonies too. no.4 is my favourite of the lot. 'The Seasons' is another favourite work of his, and also the two 'Concert Waltzes'. Do you have Ansermet's recording of the Seasons and waltzes? If not, I better start working trying to persuade you to get it! ;)

I don't have a CD version of The Seasons (there may be an LP buried somewhere in my none to organized LP collection). I was listening this evening to clips at Amazon of the Serebrier version, coupled with the Fifth.  I'll have to order it...or Ansermet  ;)  ...which can be had for less than 4 Euro.

I haven't heard the Serebrier yet. But the Ansermet comes with my highest recommendations, it also has the wonderful Concert Waltzes which you don't get often! :)

Good night everyone! :)

Listening to Symphony No. 4 from this recording. Great performances. I like the clarity of this performance of the 4th.

Since Tennstedt's Schumann Fourth was my favorite (among the final contenders) in a recent GMG-instigated blind listening test, I wanted both his Schumann-Berlin recordings. On EMI Red Line they're coupled with Vonk's 1st and 2nd, respectively, to form a cycle. Other EMI re-issues of a cheap Schumann-Symphony cycles use all-Vonk. OK price on German Amazon (link above), dirt cheap from the UK (link here)
