George

I recently switched to Firefox, because i was fed up with Safari. Then Firefox started to move too slow for me.

I found this site and tried their suggestions, and now things are moving faster.

Just thought I'd share the info:

Hope you're having a speedy day!  $:)

Worked like a charm -- thanks George!
The man that hath no music in himself,
Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils.
The motions of his spirit are dull as night,
And his affections dark as Erebus.
Let no such man be trusted.

-- William Shakespeare, The Merchant of Venice

There is also a Firefox add-on that dos exactly the same thing and saves heaps of typing etc. it's called "Tweak Network" and you get a choice of how powerful you want to make it.

Thanks Holden, I have just installed the add-on.

What values do you recommend for:

1. Max Connections

2. Max Connections per server

3. Max persistent Connections per server

4. Max persistent Connections per proxy

5. Pipelining Max Requests

I don't know about add-ons, since it took me about a minute to make the necessary changes. They do work beautifully.

Which changes? The ones in my OP?  :)

My thought too. The only typing I did was the name of the added integer value. The add-on is nice, but I know that I would end up asking the same questions George is asking, and more. :-\

Can someone help me with this..I wanted to download a file from megaupload, but they required me to download a tool bar first. And like an idiot I did...and now from time to time I get a stupid link to somewebsite megaclick.com with some dns error. Ive done adware and virus scans and I dont get anything...I of course uninstalled the program but its still there somehow.

Those tweaks are so old that I'm surprised that firefox doesn't have them set there by default by now! :D

We've been having to do this since firefox was released for crying out loud. ::)

Yes, it's called Tweak Network Settings and there is a default setting there.

George - I choose the Power option and also click the two pipelining boxes. I've left maxrequests at a value of 8 though you can go to 16 if you want for a very negligible difference. All this is doing is replicating the process you went through via about:config.

Get MS Windows Defender (free) and run it. It may find the program. It also can show you what is loaded at startup and what is running in the background. You can also see that in the Taskmanager (ctrl+alt+del), but it is much easier to use Defender since you don't have to look up every single item listed under Processes in Taskmanager. Defender neatly lists the processes and tells you what they are, paths etc.
Spybot is also pretty effective for stuff like that but Defender is more versatile. If you find the process but can not deinstall it properly, just delete it, then run CCleaner and scan for issues. It will find the remaining, now unassociated entries in the registry. But don't forget to back up the registry before deleting the values (Ccleaner will offer to do that before making any changes in the registry).
If you still can't get rid of the nasty bug, make sure all your personal data are backed up (which they should be anyway), then run System Restore and restore to a point before you installed that. Any other programs you may have installed since then will be taken out of the system, but actual data you created in documents or other files shouldn't get lost. But it is better to back up anyway!
Good hunting!

Cool thanks M, I'll give it a shot.

God haha I feel like an ass. As I was installing that, I went to tools/add ons and I saw megaupload add on...It was still there for some reason even though I uninstalled it from the control panel. I think its cured now, thanks for the help!

That may not even be your "fault". A lot of uninstall routines don't work properly and leave unecessary and unwanted residue in the system, and some programs even do what you described after they have been allegedly "uninstalled", probably for evil purposes and reasons.

Okay, I did it, but now I have a problem.
From the day I followed the above instructions I have troubles in visualizing other websites. Things are not in order, pages are messed up. I tried to surf with InternetExplorer just to see if it was a major connection or Pc problem, and it worked, so I conclude that problems are linked to the changes I've made to speed up firefox.

Is there a way to delete the changes, reverse the whole thing?

Wait...why not just go back and do the reverse?
