I wonder. When you look back late at night, you all like me probably heard a lot of music but what made you choose that particular music. Was it a carefully chosen playlist or more the result of picking at random. I for myself find that, when f.i. I read about a composer, I usually want to study his music in depth and so I listen to a lot of works of the same composer, one after the other. But I guess moods are also relevant. When feeling a bit low, I am not going for - let's say - Mahler but maybe Mozart.

Bruckner helps me through difficult spiritual times  ;) (that's from Harry if I recall correctly)

First, I segregate Elgar from the rest by forming two piles: Elgar and Non-Elgar;

Second, I place the Elgar pile in a cardboard box and seal it securely;

Finally, I listen to the non-Elgar pile ........ and rejoice and bask in its glory ..........

I stand in front of my CD shelves and, inevitably, one or two CDs just jumps out of the mass of 2500 or so and pop into my vision. That is what I play.

Listen again! Maybe, just maybe, the voice is suggesting Mendels.

"Mendels...., son!"

Whim, mostly  ::)

Rarely I have those moments when I crave to listen to something and the music plays in my head until I play it. Not necesarily classical music though. The other day I had Scissor Sisters' Tits on the Radio all day long playing in my head

I listen according to mood, if I am stressed out, Mozart or Chopin. If I am upset, Beethoven, Rachmaninov or Shostakovich. If I am in a more neutral mood, I choose something new to me or something I haven't heard in awhile.

Ditto. But I have only around 1100 discs to choose from. ;D

I play what is new, and there are a few piles around my friend.
No Pettersson when I am depressed, that's a warning for everyone.
In the morning I love baroque, or earlier music, vocal or instrumental.
After the coffee anything goes.
I pick at random really.

Me too. That, plus CDs form the pile of recent aquisistions. Or when I have listening "projects" when I listen to larger boxes 1-2 CDs pr week. As I'm doing with my recently bought 22 CD Stravinsky box.

My main determining factor is the discs I have to review.  MusicWeb discs are in one pile; other discs for review are another pile.  Of course, also in these piles are the discs I use as comparision versions.

I also try to at least sample every disc I acquire on the day of acquisition; that doesn't always happen though.
