The 9th Symphony of Vaughan Williams.

Really? Wow. I'm fucking impressed, Dawg. Really (the Ninth is a favorite). Does VW still interest you?

Classical music is everyone's thing. Most people just don't believe it.

I used to believe that, but I don't anymore. It's no different from saying that Lars von Trier movies are everyone's thing, or French Impressionists.

I proselytized in my youth. Never worked. Never. I was just wasting my time.  I've come to the conclusion that we few have something seriously wrong with our brains...well, something different anyway  ;D  that allows for an appreciation of classical music. We few, we proud, we warped  8)

Lars von Trier is just one filmmaker. I am into classical music but I am not into Rossini.

I am sure everybody would find classical music they like. SO MUCH to choose from!!

Yes. It rarely works but it's not because classical isn't for everyone. It's because people are stubborn, ignorant, locked socially and too lazy to work for discovery and understanding.

My older cousin had a fantastic stereo system back in the 1960's, and he played an LP of the 9th with Boult conducting.  It sounded so good, and he let me take it home.

Have to say that VW is no longer one of my favorite composers, although I play his music at least a few times each year.  Shostakovich is the composer whose music I've loved for all these decades.  Interest in my main man Bach didn't start until the 1980's.

Do you really think most people would find Bach's violin concertos disgusting if they gave those works a change??

I didn't have a f*cking clue about how great those are before I gave them a change! I was a technohead ignoring classical music considering it extremely boring.

Classical music is for everybody. Society just brainwashed people to think otherwise. But society is just society. Music and art is above it.

Don't you agree? In average mankind is idiotic compared to how wise/cultivated it could be with all the knowledge we have.

No agreement from me.  I think that humans get better all the time, although there sure are still many losers out there.

"Disgusting" is a silly word to use in this context, but there are, in fact, people who have heard Bach and don't like his music.  Same holds true for classical music generally.  You are engaging in wishful thinking.

I hate to bring us back to the topic  :) but in response to the original question - for me, Tchaikovsky's 1st Piano Concerto - Dichter and the Boston SO / Leinsdorf.  I was around 12, and picked it up at a library sale with a few other classical albums.  I had just started secondary school, and my music teacher started us off with Peer Gynt that week - I realized that I really liked classical music (a vast extrapolation from one piece).  Went to the sale that Saturday.  Never looked back.  Even when my classmates were all buying NME I was happy to read Gramophone.

What a surprise.  :D Classical music is everyone's thing. Most people just don't believe it.
Seems like this would be true, since there is more variety in Classical music than any other type of music. However, many people have an extremely shallow and close-minded view of music and only listen to music they can sing and dance to.
